Here is a delightful program and exemplary recording that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Prague Piano Duo. For, as Harry Halbreich remarks, “it was in the very year of his death that the musician created for this grouping three of his greatest masterpieces.” Schubert’s work for four hands occupies a unique place in musical history, without common measure compared to any other composer (even Mozart, who nonetheless wrote several masterful works for the grouping). For Schubert, four hands playing had a very particular signification. As Brigitte Massin so pertinently wrote, “It will always be for him the place of musical exchange and dialogue, the symbol of fraternal communion at the heart of one affective universe. And we know that thirst for friendship was the most powerful psychological mobile of his existence, - a mobile without which his creative work seems unthinkable.” With mastery at each moment, based on an osmosis enlightened by the stamp of authority, the Prague Duo mesmerizes beyond the notes. Whether for the famous Fantasy Op.103 D.940, the Rondo Op.138 D.608, the Andantino Op.84 N°1 D.823, the Variations on a French Song Op.10 D.624, or the Allegro Op.144 D.947, their inspiration is consummate and depicts to perfection the richest shades of Schubert’s discourse. A great Moment!
