Joseph Haydn's "The Seasons" (Die Jahreszeiten) was his last great public success. At the same time it is his last great choral work.
"The Seasons" contains four parts: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. This recording concludes Sir Colin Davis' Haydn Series with London Symphony Orchestra.*
Davis reaches Spring's stormy prologue very well. London Symphony Chorus' tone is - at last - clear. For example Spring's first chorus, "Komm holde Lenz" is very beautiful.
Multi-channel mix is excellent: Barbican Hall's dry acoustic isn't dull. Actually, it really works with this work. "The Seasons" isn't religiously oratorio. My subwoofer switched on - sometimes -when Summer's tempest movement begins. Wonderful listening experience!
Soloist are also very good. Sally Matthews is the whole team's best singer: her voice is beautiful.
Wonderful reading of this familiar work. Highly recommend!

*) After Sir Colin's death (2013) LSO Live published one more recording, his interpretations of Haydn's five late symphonies.
