Delighted with the musical content of this disc but not, alas, the sound quality, and I would be most interested to read the experiences of others who have purchased. The quality of the transfers, or possibly the condition of the source tapes, seems to be very variable. The cello concerto is generally very clean with considerable depth and realism to the solo instrument which is recorded very forward as in the other recordings by Miss Du Pre which I own, and a satisfying sense of scale to the full orchestra. But the choral pieces sound distinctly "edgy" with what appears to me appreciable and quite offensive distortion to the loud vocal passages. In addition, the level of tape hiss is unusually high, especially on the early tracks. My first experience of the EMI Japan hybrid discs and I would hesitate to venture further without auditioning first or suitable reassurance from other members on this site.

I agree with the prior review. This is the poorest of the reissue EMI SACDs I have heard, which I generally have been very positive on. The cello concerto holds up quite well against the original HMV LP, although perhaps not quite as transparent, but the LP is much cleaner on the choral works. I don't love them anyway, but on the LP give them a listen occasionally. I won't bother listening beyond the concerto on the SACD, which, by the way, is much better than the RBCD coupled with the Elgar concerto. The sound evaluation is a combination of 4 on the concerto, 2 on the choral works.
