Performance:   Sonics:
I think it's the best No 4 I've ever heard, and these are a lot (nearly 20 versions). I owned the CD, but my wish, having the SACD was a good, but very expensive buy. About 60 , ordered from
Carlos KLeiber in the CD-Booklet: ....for those who have an ear for vitality, there are things here that no orchestrra can play for you als eagerly and pertly or as inspired and delightfully as this orchestra on that day (3rd of May 1982).
The CD has a little bit of tape-hissing, but the SACD plays in another league. Full bodied, every instrument of the orchestra is placed well in the sonic stage. The recording is much more better than the old CD.
The interpretation of the 4th by Carlos Kleiber is exceptional. No other conductor got so much power from the orchestra, esp. the beginning of the 1st movement is very thrilling. You are seating on the edge of your chair listening the symphony. The tempos are on the fast side, but very well paced.
For me, it's the ONE and ONLY recording you must have.
