Performance:   Sonics:
It is always with great pleasure that we discover the latest SACD of the music of Paul Hindemith, this German composer who is little known and liked outside his native country. Still, “he was a passionate theoretician who exposed the results of his research in a treatise on composition and musical syntax in which he proposed the principles of the irreducibility of tonality, and the necessity of an “expanded” tonality that did not use the major-minor opposition, but rather one which relied on a hierarchical order of intervals,” states Harry Halbreich. Present here are the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra from 1939, the Sonata for Solo Violin Op.31 N°2 from 1924, the Sonata for Violin and Piano Op.11 N°1 from 1918, the Sonata for Violin and Piano from 1935, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano from 1939. All the artists here heard deserve praise, and the musical serenity of Franz Peter Zimmermann offers the perfect setting to savor, and quite rightly, music that is among the most inventive.
