Performance:   Sonics:
For her new recording, the flutist Sharon Bezaly has prepared a copious menu around seven composers of differing nationalities. The first course is the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), followed by the Poem for Flute and Orchestra by Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) dating from 1918, followed by the main course, which is the Concerto for Flute and Orchestra Op.283 by Carl Reinecke (1824-1910), followed by the Concertino for Flute and Orchestra Op.107 by Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), the Largo and Allegro for Flute and Strings by Piotr Illich Tchaïkovski (1840-1893) adapted by Ernest Sauter, and the Sonata for Flute by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) in an orchestration by Lennox Berkeley. The dessert is Nikolaï Rimski-Korsakov’s famous Flight of the Bumblebee in an arrangement by Kalevi Aho that will thrill the most critical ears. In short, here are real fireworks assuredly lead by an inspired Neeme Jarvi. As for Sharon Bezaly, as always she subjugates us with a learned mix of virtuosity, poetry and passion. Here, quite simply, is musical bliss.
