It is thanks to René Gambini, founder and artistic director of the label Lyrinx, that this SACD, with its unexpected program, exists. In effect, these “refound affinities” between the music of Couperin and that of Chopin may surprise quite a few. “Unless one is impermeable to the profound sense of music,” underlines René Gambini with pertinence, “and ignores that which characterizes French literature or simply the French spirit (elegance, clearness of discourse, modesty, concision, saying the maximum in the least number of words… fleeing pathos, not weighing down the expression of the deepest feelings, etc.) – read or reread Ronsard, du Bellay, Racine, La Fontaine, Musset, Larmartine, Baudelaire (there are too many that would need to be cited) – it is impossible for a musician who is sensitive, perspicacious, and modestly cultivated not to feel what is obvious: if the sound of Chopin is very often Slavic, the treatment is the pure product of a spirit which is by culture, if not by birth, totally French.” The program of the recording revolves around pieces by Couperin and mostly the Mazurkas by Chopin. The pianist Vittorio Forte further states: “Going from the evocative sadness of the “Ombres errantes” to the dramatic tone of “L’Attendrissante,” this discographic experience can be heard as an initiatory trip marked by the meeting of two different styles.” With exemplary sensitivity, melding refinement and depth, richness of colors and phrases that evocatively breathe life, this disc is a real and unforgettable masterpiece. Here is an SACD that is quite simply monumental.
