Performance:   Sonics:
Another great discographic re-encounter that can now be heard in its sonic fullness thanks to remastering based on the original tapes, these recordings by Igor Markevitch are landmarks. Modest Mussorgsky first, with the famous Pictures at an Exhibition in the orchestration by Maurice Ravel, and Russian Songs in the orchestration by Markevitch himself, then it is Igor Stravinsky’s turn with his Symphony of Psalms. The soprano Galina Vishnevskaya loans her luminous voice to the songs of Mussorgsky (recorded in 1962), whereas the Pictures at an Exhibition are transcended by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a recording dating from 1953. The Symphony of Psalms by Stravinsky is from a 1960 recording with the Russian state chorus and symphonic orchestra. This is obviously a limited pressing SACD to acquire right away.
