Great Film Fantasies - Kunzel          (5 of 5 found this review helpful)
  May 20, 2007

This SACD has a perfect start: the Star Wars main theme in multi-channel! Probably the best recording of the “Main Theme” available. Some of the latest Kunzel performances may have left much to be desired – this is definitely not the case here. Like in the good old “Star Tracks” days, Star Wars, ... more
The Phantom of the Opera - OST        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  April 15, 2007

Thanks to “Phantom of the Opera” - The Movie – we get to enjoy this soundtrack which also got released on SACD. At first I was a little bit skeptical about it and began to compare it to the well-known original cast recording from 1987 (with Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton), but very shortly stopped ... more
Timeline        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  October 16, 2005

Jerry Goldsmith’s last score was not used for the movie it was intended for. After the testscreening, “Timeline” had to be re-edited. Goldsmith supposedly did not want to alter his score, so the film was rescored and this work was named “music inspired by the film”. Already the first seconds ... more

The tracks contents range from different flavors of music to drums, choir, singing mice and sound effects (thunder storm, subway, etc.). They are specifically designed for multichannel, but also utilize ... more
Star Trek: Nemesis - Original Soundtrack          (8 of 8 found this review helpful)
  October 9, 2005

According to the booklet, this SACD recording was the first (original) movie soundtrack recorded using DSD technology. It is so well done (live takes, no remixing), that I hope there will be many more recordings like this. In short: Star Trek never sounded better! The brass is astoundingly rich and ... more

Some multi-channel mixes with low frequencies only on the .1 LFE

Correct, you are right, there should be no need for anybody to mix anything else then very low frequencies to the sub. And that's the problem, some labels already do their own "bass management" in the mix and take off low frequencies from the main speakers. Which is a shame, because 1) SACD players offer their own bass management for this purpose ... more
Some multi-channel mixes with low frequencies only on the .1 LFE

Well, SACD players allow for a certain set up (mine - Denon 2900 - is also set 5 large + no sub. however it doesn't help, bass management cannot work the other way, because, the .1 channel (according to ITU) may also be used in a different way (height channel, 2+2+2, etc.). I also got this answer from Denon directly. ... more

That's the way it should be, however, like I said before, some labels mix 5.1 meaning that the sub is essential. There should be a specific labeling for that. ... more

This is only a one way street: bass management only works the other way - it can shift the low frequencies to the sub not vice versa. ... more
