Respighi: Roman Trilogy - Ashkenazy          (2 of 20 found this review helpful)
  April 2, 2011

I reviewed the companion SACD to this back in June 16, 2009 so it is time to critically look at this one. Both were recorded by the same engineers at the same sessions in March 2004 and April 2005. The was released in 2005 and in 2006. It is my feeling that perhaps some equalization and other ... more
Sibelius: Karelia Suite, Finlandia, The Wood-Nymph etc. - Vänskä        (8 of 41 found this review helpful)
  April 1, 2011

Jean Sibelius is one of my favorite composers and the Karelia Suite is my very favorite composition of his, so I was thrilled at this release. I wanted desperately to LOVE this SACD however it was sonically a big disappointment and musically it was not competitive to my favorite ... more
Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition etc. - Järvi          (15 of 32 found this review helpful)
  February 28, 2011

As mentioned in the this is my favorite SACD and what to my ears is not only the finest sounding SACD so far but the finest sounding recording in my 50 years of listening to music in nearly every format invented by mankind. This is the SACD I selected to take with me to ... more

  February 22, 2011

Producer: Robert Woods Engineer: Jack Renner Fantastic performances of some of my favorite ballet selections of all time! Unlike the previous two reviewers I find the sound of reference quality, very realistic and with near-perfect timbre. Daland said "You have to turn up the volume considerably ... more
Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture - Gergiev        (13 of 27 found this review helpful)
  November 26, 2009

I have a dissenting view, I have listened to the Mariinsky 1812 through both speakers and my Sennheiser headphones. I am sorry to say I am very disappointed in it's sound quality, not only of the sound of the orchestra but the bass fundamental of the cannon shots are totally missing in two channel ... more

That is good news as all but one of my Blu-ray discs have video. Quite a bit of AIX's catalog is on Blu-ray with 24/96 in both multichannel and stereo plus high resolution video of the performance. There are also many great Blu-ray concert videos from the major labels but usually only at 24/48. I get Blu-ray for high resolution audio plus high ... more
SACD Stereo: it doesn't make sense

Hi Marpow, Rather than try to go into all the reasons why I prefer 2-channel Stereo, I will instead direct you to my defunct website "HiRezStereo" which is combined in a single long page on my later defunct website "AnalogLovers" which has been kindly archived by "Vinyl Fanatics" Even though ... more
SACD Stereo: it doesn't make sense

Ralph the reason I never liked movies with subtitles is I am a slow reader and I can't see what is happening on screen when trying to read the captions, even more troubling a new set of captions appear before I am finished reading the first set. Thus I never go to a foreign film at a theatre. Perhaps I am not the only slow reader out there? At ... more
Where to buy/sell SACD players & media
June 10, 2015
Hi Daniel, While I do love the sound of tubes, Iíve not heard the Shanling SCD-T200 SACD Player. I used to own a tubed SACD player, the Xindak SCD-2. I have a tubed preamp, however my physical media player is a Yamaha Blu-ray player which also plays SACD. I also have a Teac DAC for DSD and PCM downloads. Ubertrout is correct about my poor health, ... more
What is SHM-SACD?
June 19, 2014
Actually uncompressed multichannel wouldn't fit on a single-layer SACD since SHM-SACDs don't use DST lossless compression. They believe uncompressed DSD sounds better than losslessly compressed DSD (DST). Those single-layer Sony multichannel SACDs used DST lossless compression. SHM-SACD Specs: SHM - Super High Material Green labels - helps ... more
