I recently picked this from Amazon. I put it into my cars cd player.
On my way to work, as a band director, I was pleasantly surprised.
Great sound, sturdy performance, solid interpretation.
I have yet to play it on the sacd player. But, Ihave a feeling it will be quite good.

Maybe not quite Abbado. But, this is outstanding.

OK-I am not sure if this recording assures Abbado's place in history.
The recording team did an average job on this symphony. Abbado's interpretation was above average certainly.
But, I have found Solti and Jansons even better.
The SACD mix was OK-not great. |

Let me start by saying I have owned Rostropovich (2 versions), DePreist (2), Jarvi, Ashkenazy, Haitink, Berglund, Bychkov and Mravinsky. The only versions I couldn't stand were both Rostropovich's. For my taste, way too slow. The newer DePreist was a disappointment as well.

My wife and I have always loved this recording. This was a discovery on a trip to Michigan over ten years ago. The music store was playing it on the sound system and we immediately had to get it. The trumpet playing of Bud Herseth was monumental.

| This is an addendum to my non-sacd review of this disk.
I liked the sonics in the car. But, after listening at home, in the sacd player, i can not recommend this disk.
Truly disappointing. Trumpets are buried at the end of the chorale. Tempos do not move naturally.
Music just sits there as if it wants to speak, but doesn't.

| I don't want to seem like a know it all, but, the Shostakovich 7 does not end with two quiet celesta notes.
The end of the "Leningrad" is hugely loud and bombastic. I think you have #4 or #8 in mind.
As to this cycle, I have liked most of it. I have "1905"on SACD and love it. The bells are, in a word, HUGE!

| I bought a couple of the Living Stereo Re-issues because I really enjoyed the original issues.
At the time, January 2005, I didn't have a SACD player. Finally, we bought a Sony player. The Chicago recordings, esp. Concerto for Orchestra and Strauss, were amazing on a good system.
