I put this record on with a certain amount of trepidation in view of the harsh string tone in some (but not all) of this RPO/Membran series. This one is fine - with a light, transparent and airy tone and a discreet rounding out of the sound from the rear speakers. The performances are very good. I ... more |

These are likeable performances. I thought the big band sound might have come from being recorded in a church. Unfortunately the string sound is harsh and steely and although I have tried to like the performances there is no getting past the sound of the strings. A pity because the Bizet/Grieg disc ... more |

The great Sir Alexander recorded this in 1995 the year of his death and yet the performances have the verve and enthusiasm of a young man in his prime. The brass of the RPO roar out with an excellent rasp and the strings respond with a silky athleticism. 4.5 stars from me for an excellent digital ... more |

Excellent recording of the piano, beautifully clear and with excellent presence. I have very much enjoyed these performances - the RPO on very good form in support. |

Please don't let some grumpy comments put you off. But I know how you feel. Some of my ratings for the sound of some Membran discs came under a lot of attack which I took a bit personally, when the critics ignored the fact that most of the membrans that I had reviewed had also been reviewed by other people and in every such case the other reviews ... more |

Reading Peter's review was a joy because you communicated the real pleasure the record and the music gave you. And that's what it is all about in the end. In my humble opinion it was also very well written, or at least certainly more than well enough written for this context. Perhaps Edvin's grasp of English is not one hundred percent? ... more |
