Lest anyone get the idea, from an otherwise spot-on sonic review, that this album is one long, song-by-song drum solo, I have to say that it is not that at all. You hear all 4 elements of this wonderful, explosive band very clearly, though the live drums catch your attention first. Producer Nigel ... more |

I have the original Joe Gastwirt-mastered CD of this and was quite happy with its sound. But the Mobile Fidelity SACD blows that away--the experience is similar to watching HD television for the very first time. This album is frankly quite spotty in the songwriting department, and without the two ... more |

This release was a HUGE disappointment - compare this with the DCC gold CD and you will discover that the version of "Heartbreak Hotel" is an nth-generation dub copy that sounds like it's in a tunnel. This was Elvis's landmark breakthrough and they couldn't be bothered to locate the original mixdown ... more |

I really cannot recommend this, as it's like the other George Marino mastering jobs I own: shrill in the upper midrange. It's very similar in sound to those early CDs that you can only crank up halfway before the high end singes your eardrums.

Folks, the reason this SACD disappoints is because the original vinyl does too. Fact is, this album's sessions were blighted by the drug issues of two of the band, and it shows in some of the mixes, especially "Talk Of The Town", which is one of the two standout tunes. This album is without a doubt, ... more |

If sales in Cologne & Venlo are any indication, this SACD sold so poorly that the other releases were pulled, pronto.
I saw multiple copies in the bargain 8.99 (Euro) bin a few months after release in both cities. ... more |

Here is the weird thing--a poster on Steve Hoffman's SH Forum Music Corner board just scarfed the SACD of "Rocks" from a chain store in California--the post even has photos of him holding the single layer stereo disc, which he says sounds fantastic.

Well, it's a (re-) start, but both Silly, Stoned & Sony and Universal Disaster have got a long way to go before I can really believe them. For starters, how about finally issuing ALL the Steely Dan classic LPs in 5.1 SACD, like Eliott Scheiner has been nagging them to let him do, and for Sony's part, how about finally releasing the first five Byrds ... more |
