I have a wonderful recording of Concierto de Aranjuez on an Alahambra (Spanish Columbia EMI) LP with Narciso Yepes as the soloist and Atualfo Argenta that I consider to be the best performance and the best recorded rendering of this work. This new mastering (although a valiant effort from ... more
Blood, Sweat & Tears: Blood, Sweat & Tears        (3 of 5 found this review helpful)

The new issue sounds great, the stereo version sounds vastly superior to the first SACD issue that came out when SACD's first hit the market. Be forewarned, the multi-channel Quad version is extremely disappointing simply because the Quad master that this was taken from used the shortened, ... more
Cream: Goodbye      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  August 3, 2014

I felt exactly the opposite than the other reviewer. I thought that this issue of the Cream album collection was universally awful. This is NOT the fault of the Universal remastering staff, but just a characteristic of how badly this album was originally recorded due to the tremendous noise that the ... more
Cream: Wheels of Fire      (5 of 6 found this review helpful)
  April 17, 2014

I only rated this a "5" in terms of sonics because it's the best sounding issue of Wheels Of Fire that's ever been done. The studio album was recorded miserably because the volume of Cream's oversized amps and Baker's overwrought drums overloaded and clipped the recording equipment that Mr. Dowd ... more

New Everest SACD Releases in January 2016

I just bought 15 of these Everest releases from Amazon.jp. I found them to be very underwhelming. They probably just used the CD's that Amazon creates on demand as their source. If they REALLY had access to the master tapes, they would have done what Vanguard Classics did with the superb Everest masters that they released -- put 'em out in 3 track ... more
New Ring on BR Audio

Isn't the Furtwangler Ring from '53 on Japanese SACD fantastic? Wish that EMI would release it, reasonably priced for the rest of the world! Your SACD Solti Ring is, I assume, the incredibly overpriced set from Esoteric? I found that the Blu-Ray version was better sounding than the Esoteric set (which BTW, was NOT mastered from the original ... more
SACD Bob Dylan Discussion

If you have Usenet news, you can download a DTS CD image of the Nashville Skyline quadraphonic mix from the newsgroup alt.binaries.sounds.dts. Properly decoded, its very interesting. The guy who mixed it for quad, Neil Wilburn, played a lot of fun "tricks" moving instruments around in the quad soundspace. Particularly interesting is the ... more
SACD Bob Dylan Discussion

They missed a great opportunity in not reissuing the quad mix of "Nashville Skyline". The quad mix was created back in 1972 by one of the two original engineers on the album (Neil Wilburn) and was a pretty interesting mix. It would have cost them almost nothing to have included it and there was certainly room on the 30 minute SACD for it..... ... more
