I saw my first opera in 1972 - The Barber of Seville. I was hooked for life. When I was at the Dana School of Music, we used to go to recitals at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron. As a music student, our tickets were $1.00. For $1.00, I saw Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne, Beverly Sills, Luciano Pavarotti, Shirley Verrett, Elly Ameling and lots of others.

Living in Northeastern Ohio, my only exposure to the Met was the Met on Tour at the Cleveland Coliseum (giant hockey rink). But what performances: Turandot with Corelli; Boris with Talvela; Lohengrin with Lorengar and Alexander; Norma with Verrett; Il Trittico with Scotto; La Prophet with Horne, L’Italiani in Algeri with Horne; and lots of others.

I first went to the Met in NYC in 1980: Elektra with Nilsson; Fidelio with Vickers.

When I moved to NYC in 1982, I become a regular in the standing room lines: Lucia with Sutherland and Kraus (7 times); Gioconda with Marton and Domingo. Thereafter I become a subscription holder. I have attended 5 Ring cycles at the MET

I am incredibly thankful that I saw Leontyne Price, Leonie Rysanek, Christa Ludwig, Nicolai Gedda, Carlo Bergonzi, Roberta Peters, Renata Scotto, Marilyn Horne, Joan Sutherland, Monserrat Caballé, Martti Talvela, Samuel Ramey, Sherrill Milnes, Cornel MacNeil, Pilar Lorengar, Gilda Cruz-Romo, Fernando Corena, Magda Olivero, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras and Regine Crespin all before their retirement.

Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4, The Hebrides - Szell      (2 of 3 found this review helpful)
  April 22, 2015

Note – this review of the Sony Records International SACD SIGC 3. Great sound improvement over the Sony Essentials Classic CD issues of these works. Examples: - Symphony 4 last movement – Clear lines of staccato music for all in ultimate phrasing. - The ppp violins on the Overture to Midsummer ... more
Pops Caviar, Russian Orchestral Fireworks - Fiedler        (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  January 18, 2014

Thankfully this was a present. While the sound is very good, the performances are not. The Boston Pops could be a careless ensemble and they are here. Several instances of out of tune unison woodwinds, sloppiness, etc. But most disappointing is that most of the works don't have any life (surprising ... more
Verdi & Puccini: Arias - Leontyne Price        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  October 8, 2013

This classic recital – The Blue Album – has never sounded better. Price is in glorious early voice for one of the all-time greatest opera recitals. The sound improvement is astounding. Wide sound stage with Price standing front and center. Two examples of sound improvement: In “Chi il bel sogno ... more
Richard Strauss: Music from Salome, Elektra - Borkh/Reiner        (7 of 8 found this review helpful)
  December 28, 2012

These are classics from Reiner and Borkh. Having owned this on LP and Living Stereo CD, I was not prepared for the vast improvement in clarity, dynamic range, spacing and color this SACD provides. I was blown away in the recognition scene when Elektra discovers it is Orest. The sound Reiner and ... more
Beethoven, Bruch: Violin Concertos - Grumiaux        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)
  October 24, 2012

Beethoven Violin Concerto; Arthur Grumiaux, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Colin Davis I remember hearing this recording in the mid 70s and wasn’t impressed. The years and the SACD sound have not changed my opinion. In fact, I’ve always much preferred Grumiaux’s recording with Galliera (which has ... more

I'd agree with those Firestone Christmas LPs. I did manage to get them transferred to CD, so I do have the pops and clicks (and a skip in Gordon MacRae's "Go Tell it on the Mountain"). The 2nd disc always had, for me, the ultimate Akron recording: "The Hal - lay - loo - yuh Chorus". Why this Ohio twang pronunciation was never corrected has always ... more
