This is the best account of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony I have heard for a long time. Set in a realistic perspective, this live recording from 1982 (with applause at the beginning and at the end) easily surpasses Kleiber's earlier account for Deutsche Grammophon. A first-class recording that fills a gap in the SACD repertoire. There appears to be an excellent rapport between soloist, conductor and orchestra. This set is a real disappointment. The multi-channel sound ranges from acceptable to execrable, without any clear pattern emerging (some early concertos sound better than others and the same goes for the mature concertos).
