Masterpiece.

Dynamic range - by the bucket load
Sound stage - Hypnotic
Transients - thought my speakers might pop
Subtle detail - hairs on the back of the neck
Analogue - I would have believed it wasn't digitised
Compression - absolutely not

What an absolutely fantastic job they've done.
Incredible performance and Sonics.

I heard a definition of audiophile that seems fitting. One who is kept up at night wondering if they have the definitive version of a particular release. Up until recently my go to version was the SHM CD from Japan. I recently received the Blu-ray and upon first audition it seemed no better than the CD. I had to turn the volume up on the Blu-ray before an improvement over the CD revealed itself, it is definitely there though. There are 3 listening options and it took a little while to determine what sounded the best. All options are stereo. There is DTS HDMA 24/192, LPM Stereo 24/192 and Dolby TrueHD 24/192. The LPCM option is the one that sounded the best. Upon seeing the bit rate this confirmed why the LPCM sounded the best. For DTS HD the bit rate was 7.4 Mbps, for LPCM is was 9.9 Mbps and for Dolby TrueHD it was 6.6 Mbps. Overall I was not blown away with the Blu-ray but it was an improvement over the SHM CD so I thought it was money well spent. Then I started to read on the SA-CD forum page that the FLAC download was a big improvement. Once again I had to make the purchase because I just had to know. So off to Acoustic Sounds website I went and downloaded the new FLAC file. I was skeptical of it's difference since it suppose to be from the same source but it only took a few seconds of listening and it was very clear. This was a vast improvement over the Blu-ray. There was no question. The difference was bigger than the SHM CD to Blu-ray. I do not know why this is, it just is. So if you have the ability to play the FLAC file, don't waste your money on the Blu-ray. Thank you to all the writers on the Forum for letting me know about this option, I would have never thought it would be the way to go.

Supertramp: Crime of the Century Blu Ray Audio Stereo Only 2014

This is my first experience with this disc (Crime Of The Century) in any format. I am familiar with the songs as I own and have listened many times to Live in Paris.

Supertramp's 1974 3rd disc. This 2014 disc is part of a remastering series, including RBCD with Live at Hammersmith Odeon but this disc is only the original 8 track song list. Remastered by Ray Staff.

The DR values for 2014 are 13 whereas the MOFI 1987 disc is DR 16.

I listened via all HDMI outs and after fc'n around trying to get comfortable with DTS HD MA, Dolby Tru HD, I finally settled in on LPCM. All of them being stereo 24bit/192KHz. The LPCM and DTS HD MA very hard to tell difference whereas the Dolby Tru HD just didn't do it for me. FYI: when given the choice I mostly settle in on DTS HD MA as it usually is a little more bassy and I like that. The LPCM just seemed to have a tiny bit better presence on this disc.

Performance: A very good band doing very well on this disc. Synth and piano driven music. I read all the lyrics to find out what is The Crime of The Century, only thing I could come up was parents and elders not doing a good job with kids.

Packaging: Standard HFPA case. Mini paper booklet, all lyrics, no photos, very small 2014 40th Anniversary notes. Download card. On screen menu, easy to navigate, includes track and name of song as disc plays.

Stereo Sonics: This was a real hard one for me as I don't have an intimate relationship with previous recordings. SACD.net has been in much controversy as to the sonic quality of this disc from rubbish to greatness. I have mixed feelings. The instruments come across beautifully, huge sonic clarity and great stereo sound stage. Vocals are very clear and easy to understand. There are layers of instruments that you can hear as one. My problem areas was the big drops, too much, especially track 4 (Asylum) and track 5 (Dreamer) is certainly a little rough. There are moments when I felt there was no depth like the music felt like a flat piece of paper rather than a 3D pop out.

I realize that I am somewhat influenced by the negative reviews on SACD.net but that aside it is a good enough disc for me. It is not that iconic of a disc that I want to chase the sonic dragon and throw more money after it to see if I can find a better version. Remember MOFI's 1987 disc is the winner.

So I will be satisfied with what I have. This would be much improved and certainly more fun as a multi channel, 5.1 disc.

Oh dear...please help me (with some disc operation technicalities)

I just purchased a "pure audio" blu ray version of Crime of the Century from the Amazon market place, some seller called "beaches_entertainment."

I popped my "brand new" disc into a traditional 4 year old sony blu ray player hooked up to a Harman Kardon AVR using a dedicated optical cable for audio....

Now, never has my HK AVR not been able to decode the various playback modes and always indicates whether it is encoding , Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.

But in this case.....the disc itself won't even allow me to choose any of the 3 playback modes. In fact, as soon as the disc is "downloadeded" into the sony player , the music just begins to play automatically and no "Dolby Digital" or "DTS" gets displayed on my HK AVR as does with ALL my other blu ray(Audio) discs.

The music does sound loud though

This lack of operation from the disc is not normal!
Not for any DVDA disc or blu ray DVD disc(whether a movie or audio only)

Did I get ripped off? Is my disc defective?

'Anybody else have this issue or can make some suggestions?

Just a quick testimony here: i extensively did a A/B comparison of the rips of this magnificent album on my system (Mytek Dsd 192 DAC coupled to a mac mini with audirvana+ 2, in direct integer mode, a starlight usb cable to a matrix spdif conveter with its own power)
Rip from the blu ray audio so 24/192
Rip from the redbook AM
Rip from my MFSL CD

And the winer is , without no doubt, the MFSL, the this blu ray which an improvement from the redbook but behind the MFSL.
unfortunately i'm not good to describe precisely how SQ, i will try to when i will also compare to the bluray in my denon A1

This is another evidence that sample rate and/or encoding precision IS NOT the graal to SQ, MFSL is still alive ! (But i guess a lot of you know this already)

Regarding the flac 24/192 Vs the rip from the blu ray, i could not imagine that the source is different from the one which are on the blu ray.

For those who own a good analog vinyl system, a comparison of the MFSL vinyle vs the MFSL cd would be intersting

That said, this blu ray audio is worth the money (especially compared to the MFSL)
