My favorite "avant-garde" jazz artist, and the only SACD release of any of his solo releases. WHY hasn't "Out To Lunch" been given a multi-channel SACD release?!?!? Anyway, next to "Out To Lunch", this is my favorite solo work of Dolphy's. As has been stated before about this release, this is more like "chamber jazz." Bowed cello, flute, bass clarinet, alto sax, upright bass, and drums. Although Dolphy was considered "avant-garde" at the time, this music has really stood the test of time and is highly accessible to fans of mainstream classic jazz also. Fans of Coltrane, Miles, Monk, and Mingus should definitely pick this SACD up. Dolphy was a very peaceful and gentle man and his character really comes out in his flute/sax/bass clarinet playing. The sonics of the SACD are superb. No comparison between the original CD release and this version. Take note, however, that this is a stereo SACD, not multi-channel.

So far this is one of the best jazz sacd's sonically I've heard. On "Feathers", the alto is recorded beautifully, right there! This recording is a prime example of what sacd is capable of given a first rate analog recording to begin with. Recording studio ambience is present, soundstage cleary discernible, timbre of instruments intact. Great muscians, great recording, interesting compositions; if you like modern jazz this is well worth investigating. This disc supports my theory that the best jazz sacds are derived from well recorded analog sources.
