Reviews: Barney Wilen Quartet: Le Ca, New York Romance

Performance:   Sonics:
It's a shame the Venus SACDs are no longer in print and it seems as if there will be no further releases. A handful of them were classics, such as the Archie Shepp SACDs. Like those, New York Romance benefits from inspired playing and remarkable sound quality attributable to close-mic'ing and attention to detail in the original recording, if not the transfer to DSD. But unlike those, you don't need to be a Shepp fan to truly appreciate every nuance of the playing. Barney Wilen is a masterful musician and his style is accessible to everyone--from the jazz novice fan on up. The playing by the entire quartet is top notch. Easily a five-star performance. As for the sound...even if there is not gads of "air" around the instruments or the ultrarealism in the greatest DSD recordings, I cannot bring myself to rate the audio anything less than five-star. It really is that good, and a shame that no one else has reviewed it or even recommended it. I'm beginning to understand why Venus put a stop to its SACD releases, because here is a title that really should be in the collection of everyone with an SACD player. If it had been that popular, I bet we'd be treated to more gems from Venus. But sadly, that ship has sailed.
