There are better reviewers so besides the fact that I think Zander's recording is the worst of the SACD versions and Tilson Thomas's isn't far behind (his first and fourth are so good), I will only comment on a technical tidbit. This recording is a 4 channel recording (no center channel). Frankly this arrangement usually sounds more natural than 5 channels because of superior imaging and because the front speakers in most systems are better full range speakers than a center channel, just thought potential buyers should know.

Performance:   Sonics:
A very succesful recording of a great and complex work. Orchestra and chorus are first rate, the soloist is rather breathy and wobbly, although sings her part with fine sense of the poetry.

Once again, Zinman and his Tonnhalle Orchestra live up to expectations: a straightforward reading, magnificentlly played by the Orchestra, with careful attention to dinamic, contrasts and overall sound picture.

How it shows the long tenure of the conductor in Zurich and the painstaking work he has done with his orchestra (which is well documented in a particularly outstandin Beethoven Cycle).

The quality of sound is superb, which is quite a feat considering the number of forces involved.
