Reviews: Mahler: Symphony No. 4 - Zinman

Performance:   Sonics:
Zinman´s Mahler cycle goes from strength to strength. I would consider this recording of the fourth symphony the most succesfull of the cycle yet, only marred by the soprano soloist on the 4th movement, who has a far too mature voice for a part that needs absolute purity and steadiness of tone.

The Tonhalle Orchestra gives a perfect rendition, fully idiomatic in the intricacies of the Mahler idiom. It is not just a matter of playing all the notes, but achieving the right colours for the various episodes.

Zinman gives an analytical but warm reading of the oeuvre, never indulging in excesses, either of tempo, of accentuation or of histrionics. He controls the overall architecture with a firm pulse, but also (and this is the difficulty of Mahler) pays attention to the myriad of details, acieving always a spontaneous reply from the orchestra, fully intehrated into the vision of its Chief Conductor.

The sound achieved by the technical team is excellent: very objective, with enough ambiance and reverb to accomodate the big orchestra. A very succesful issue.
