Reviews: Alice in Chains: Greatest Hits

This must be one of the most controversial SACDs. One Asylum reviewer nominated this as the worst SACD of all times. Several others have raved about it. I rented an Alice in Chains Unplugged DVD and really liked it. That motivated me to buy the SACD. The first cut is difficult for me to listen. A little too aggressive and distorted. After that, either I become accustomed to the music or it improves. I can get in to the rest of the disc. Still, I can only listen to the disc when no one's home. My wife really hates this one.

Sonically, I find this disc difficult to rate. Distortion is a part of the music. The SACD supposed to be sonically much better than the CD. I also don't understand why the disc only has 10 selections. Seems like Sony could have added a couple additional cuts. At least Sony added multichannel tracks.

When all is said and done, I wish I would purchased the DVD rather than the SACD. The performance and audio on the DVD are exceptional.

Just relistened to this disc in 2ch and MCH after a long while. Sorry, the 2ch mix sounds better. The MCH on this is a bit of a kluge and the bass is just way over done. Sure you can tame it down but you shouldn't have to. Great songs, truely greatest hits of this band, great performances. Don't know if this is out on just redbook cd but have heard die hard Chains fans say they like the original cd mixes better. Great content, sonics could be much better. It still rocks, HARD!

Granted, the music still holds up well as prime early to mid-90's grunge, but this is the worst-sounding multichannel SACDs I've ever heard. It sounds like the master came from my granddad's 8-track tape, sounding very thin and shrill.Stick with the regular CD!

This is the "Worst Ever" SACD...Un-listenable...I really like the band, these are great songs that have been totally screwed up - so very poorly done..!!! Yes - like the other reviewer mentioned - stick to your old CD's and run from this one..If only they just did this in a standard stereo setup - it would have been so much, much better...!!!

Like the other reviews, I can't even stand to listen for more than a few minutes in multi. Harsh as hell, a real sonic disaster and just barely tolerable in 2 ch. It's a shame because Jar of Flies is one of my favorite CD's sonically too. Don't waste your money on this one.

First of all this is a great album. The bad news is the sound quality. I don't think the sound quality is as bad as othe reviews have rated it. I only listen to the MCH layer so I cannot speak for the stereo layer. I have heard much worse sounding sacd's then this one. IMO this sacd is worth owning. I grosely over paid for this album because I had to have it, but if you can pick it up for under 20 dollars I think it's a good buy.

Ruined by horrendous mastering. I play this at -25db on my receiver. The version of Man in a Box on the Philips Total Immersion Compilation I can crank to -14db. Huge difference in volume. The Philips Comp does not sound harsh or loud.

This shows the problem was not the mixing. I think the Alice in Chains mixes are very good. These mixes were butchered during the mastering.
