Reviews: Star Trek: Nemesis - Original Soundtrack

Jerry Goldsmith's score may not be his absolute best, yet given how lame this movie was, it is rather incredible that he should have come up with something this good. Nostalgically used themes from Star Trek's musical past creep in occasionally and mix well with Goldsmith's new material. The heart pumping action cues are not very original (relative to recent Goldsmith works) yet they are quite effective.

The sonics on the multichannel SACD are a significant improvement relative to the CD version. The increased dynamic range allows for greater impact. No more does the music sound constricted, the 5.1 mix allowing a greater amount of 'air' around the orchestra with the sound stage vastly improved. Many more details of Goldsmith's score can now be heard clearly - they are relatively hard to hear in the 2-channel mix. The instruments' tones are now brighter, more natural. Electronics and percussion also benefit highly.

I just started my SACD library a few months ago, and bought this disc the day I got my player. Let me just say that after buying quite a few more discs, this is still my reference. The movie was forgetable, but this soundtrack is memorable. I highly recommend this disc to anyone who loves a good, powerful brass section. There's just the right amount of reverb, which is not surprising since this was a studio recording. There is a very warm, full feeling to this album, thanks to the high-quality DSD recording.

Amazing SACD, I agree with earlier reviews, gives the orchestra much more room "to breathe."

While I'm not on a reference-quality system (Pioneer DV-667A and Logitech Z-680s) the 5.1 mix sounds just amazing to me, especially after A/B comparisons with the CD layer going digitally from my CD player.

According to the booklet, this SACD recording was the first (original) movie soundtrack recorded using DSD technology. It is so well done (live takes, no remixing), that I hope there will be many more recordings like this.

In short: Star Trek never sounded better! The brass is astoundingly rich and lifelike, the orchestra very full and dynamic. The multichannel mix is superbly done, topping even the excellent stereo mix and putting all speakers to good use. Even the center channel is effectively used (e.g. check out the baseline synthesizer and drums of track 9). The recording was made in a studio and therefore sounds “dry” compared to recordings in real orchestra halls, where there is usually more ambiance - but that is just a matter of personal taste. The same great sound can be found on “Timeline” (also composed by Goldsmith and published by Varése Sarabande on SACD), which was also recorded and mixed by Bruce Botnick and performed by Goldsmith and the same orchestra.

This work of master Jerry Goldsmith propably is not his best score ever, but nevertheless offers enough good themes and arrangements. My favorites are “Odds and End”, “The Scorpion” and “A New Ending”. Well done, Hollywood Studio Symphony!
