A very rare recording on SACD with pianoforte, for which those Mozart works have been writen.

The Kuijken are chirurgically playing, even more hearable on the pianofortes they are using Moreover Northwest recording team is on the mixing desk.

The sound is very frontal, realistic for this kind of instrument and precisely catched.

A satisfying disc with a lot of pleasure listening to.

I also really like this SACD. The Kuijken sisters have given us a wonderful performance of these gems on 2 pianofortes, which are copies of a 1788 Johann Andreas Stein pianoforte. The recording is warm & detailed without being too close. Mch provides an excellent, natural ambience.

Is this a re-release in SACD? Two US sources show this as a 2011 RBCD release with the same ID number. Wouldn't want to buy the wrong one.

I am not sure what's going on with amazon US. Mine is a hybrid SACD from 2011. Recording is from December 2009. And... As in the photo above, mine has the SACD logo on the front cover.

The front cover says pianoforte so when I bought this album I was expecting a modern grand piano type sound but what I heard was the sound I normally associate with a fortepiano.

I don`t wish to distract from a fine performance and a fine recording but can anyone explain my misunderstanding?

Many thanx!

Good question. But...(and correct me if I am wrong anyone)... there doesn't seem to be a clear-cut answer. You are correct that the word "Piano" is the abbreviated form of "Pianoforte". And the word "Fortepiano" is often used to refer to older versions of the piano that were common in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

I usually see the word "Piano" used for modern grand pianos. I rarely see a modern grand piano referred to as "Pianoforte" on CD covers, etc... For performances of Haydn and Mozart on the older type of piano, the name "Fortepiano" is most often used. However; if I see the word "Pianoforte" used (particularly for a Haydn or Mozart performance or recording), I generally assume it means "Fortepiano".

Here is an interesting article:

And in her wonderful stories, Jane Austen used the word "Pianoforte" ...not "Fortepiano"

I love the title to this video ...piano(forte)???

They are not sure what to call a modern piano, either. ;-)

It is a good demonstration of the difference, though.

Amazon US just got it wrong. Their photo didn't show the SACD logo for whatever reason and the ad indicated it was an RBCD. It arrived and it is an SACD. Case closed.

What's even better than a pianoforte? - Two pianofortes! (...on a real SACD of course :)
