Very nice - and pianist is looking rather delicious, too! OK, sexist comment aside, this is a storming-looking disc of 20th Century piano concertos.

Did anyone go to her live concerts of this repertoire in Edinburgh and Glasgow this April? From her track record, at least, she looks well up to the job.

As far as I'm aware, the Copland and Barber are both new to SACD; these featured very highly in last year's poll of most wanted concertos on SACD.

Two repertoire gaps plugged with one disc, therefore. What more do you want?

P.S. To those unfamiliar with Wang, there is a LOT more about this uber-photogenic Shanghainese pianist on the web.

I heard her playing Gershwin's Concerto in F in Buenos Aires a couple of months ago and was extremely good at it.

Saw her at the RFH a year or two ago.

and...?

She clearly can't have made much of an impression on you!

Much as I hate to look one third of a gift horse in the mouth it's a shame the Gershwin was chosen over more interesting, and far less recorded, works by Flagello and Rorem (just to name two personal favorite composers). Still, it's good to see the other pieces become available on sacd, so this one's an easy "pre-order".

Thanks for the link, interesting in several ways.Very good playing from miss Wang. At first I thought the conductor was Marin Alsop. But obviously it is not her.
One other interesting thing is the absence of the general forest of spotmics so common these days. Even in lowly Youtube sound you hear an orchestra and soloist performing in a real live acoustic together. Not one bubble for the piano and separate bubbles for sections of the orchestra but one and the same.
Relieving and nice.
The only really visible miking is the set on the floor in front of the piano. If it can be done for Youtube why so seldom for SACD?

Chris Hi

Thanks for link, John.

Gee, I thought it was Alsop as well at first - actually it's lookalike Ada Pelleg, Director of the Israel Virtuosi - a crack chamber band derived from the IPO. And rather good too, by the sound of it.

I must be slipping, but had not noticed the absence of mikes. I cannot comment on SQ, as I can only play Youtube through audio system 3 (cooking grade).

However, I would have thought a single mike in the position in front of the piano like that would be piano dominated - which it's not; rather nicely blended, in fact.

As you say, good solo playing. Have already ordered this disc, anyway! The Barber and Copland are must-buys for me.

Cheers

Jon

We were all taken in by the Marin look-a-like it seems, her trademark red shirt/blouse is not unique clearly. Wonder if she will wear it for the LNotP from the RAH next week?

Maybe start a betting pool.....

It is excellent sound Chris but don't assume the simple miking visible is the whole story as a lot of mikes are suspended high above the auditorium rather than the stage and would not be visible in these shots especially at live performances. I agree there seem to be few "on the ground" as it were.

Trademark red blouse? Are you some kinda Alsop stalker...? :-)

Getting ready with the bevvies, flags, hooters etc for LNotP, anyway.

Wot, Brits reserved and restrained? Do me a favour.
