Great review PN.
While I personally, will reserve my disc of the Year honour on another recent release,I definitely agree that it is very good indeed. Not only has this release and the preceding one in the same series made me re-consider my earlier strongly held dislike of anything HIP. This one even manages to make Mozart's D-minor sound even darker and more revolutionary than ever before on disc imo.
What a marvellous work and release it is.
No wonder Beethoven that was inspired by this masterpiece.

I am really pleased to hear that. This cycle has yet to be discovered, but we're soldiering on. Just listened to the next volume (first edit). Incredible.

Really!!? I am surprised to hear that.

Do people still have a problem with Mozart played on period instruments?

I love this cycle!!

I was just in Ludwig Beck's here in Munich, and saw a whole stack of them, under recommended new releases, right next to a pile of Fischer's new M5. So they expect to sell.

Looks like you have a great music store there.

yes, it is. They seem to stock any and every disc in existence, also SACDs; they keep most of the back catalogue in stock (incl. SACD). At any rate, I can find any new SACD I want, sometimes even earlier than online. Although the prices are a bit above what one pays online, new offerings are mostly sold at "Aktionspreis", meaning that there isn't that much difference with the online price + postage, or sometimes even cheaper overall.
And as anyone who's been at Beck's realises, you don't wanna miss that experience of having been at a great place for recorded music, a sort of classical buff's paradise. You don't see such shops that often -- I used to go to London's HMV on Oxford St, but that's peanuts compared to Beck (and it has been downsized since as well). Beck has a great atmosphere, very spacious. There isn't anything like the old-fashioned experience of buying your discs and being able to play them right thereafter, not having to wait for the post. Not so long ago they had a BIS action at Beck, big stacks of many of their discs for competitive prices.
So Beck is where it's at.

I haven't given much thought to that whole "disc(s) of the year" thing yet, but this is absolutely outstanding in every way. I've long voiced a preference for modern piano versions of the Mozart concertos despite worthy fp versions from Bilson et al, but this series really does change the recorded landscape in much the same way as Mr Brautigam's Beethoven sonata series. Bravo!

Has anyone heard the RBCD of Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Freiberg Barockorchester in K453 and K482? That is, concertos 17 and 22...

In some ways I prefer the sound of both the fortepiano and orchestra on that release, and the performances are wonderful, of course. An HIP release that may appeal to listeners who normally appreciate modern instruments, as I do.
