He did some SACD work for Analogue Productions (Blue Note) but that was many years ago. He now works with Audio Fidelity only, and masters ~1 album per month, many of which are forgotten rubbish. (See Peter Paul and Mary)

As a web host he is a giant twat which thousands of people can attest to. However, he masters digital audio as well as anyone and usually does not mess with the original recording.

So, why is he scarcely employed?

The new Peter Paul and Mary SACD on AF's remastered SACD IS, IMHO, the version to get. Have had the vinyl and this newly remastered gem unearths gobs of audio info buried in the older vinyl version.

Rubbish seems to be an overused word in your vocabulary, audiogirl.

Especially, as applied to well mastered SACDs.

You think EVERY SACD is the one to get. You are a blind consumer.

Peter Paul and Mary is the musical equivalent to a minivan. I did not say the Audio Fidelity release is poorly mastered. I would never listen to that dreck.

Back to the original question.

Does SH have any credits that are not shared with Kevin Gray or anyone else? I thought he just consults and works with other mastering engineers.

I just have some great equipment and good set of ears and no, not everything mastered to hi res passes muster.

I do question sometimes the choice of material mastered to hi res but for the $18 I paid for PP&M on AF SACD, I did get more than I bargained for.

AP's upcoming Peter, Paul & Mary's Album 1700 will, in my opinion, far surpass their first album in the SQ department as it was a better recorded album to begin with.

Garbage IN, Garbage Out will always be in vogue!

audiogirl, I have been seeing your posts and your forum submissions. I was wondering if you could reply with a list of SACDs or any other format that you feel are great performances and great sounding. Thank you.

On this topic, can one take seriously someone who gives stereocentral.tv as her web presence? Their forum is a meeting point for disgruntled former Steve Hoffman Forum members

Why ask us? You should just post this question to Steve? I'm sure he will give you a very deserving reply. Be sure to tell us what he says!

AP - Wish You Were Here, most of the Blue Notes
MFSL - anything mastered by Loverde such as Eat a Peach, In a Silent Way, etc.. In my opinion, he is the best reissue engineer (for SACD).
SHM - some of the Who, Sabbath, Rolling Stones & Stevie Wonder reissues are well done, never heard the Bill Evans titles but have heard they are excellent
Audio Fidelity - Dylan GH II
Classical - the Living Stereo are nice, but I rarely listen to the genre

I am sure there are many others, but the inconsistency is frustrating.

There are too many poorly mastered titles to list. All Depeche Mode, all Genesis, all Police, all Peter Gabriel, some AP, some MFSL, the Fantasy jazz series, etc. That is just a sampling. I suppose if you only hear those versions they would seem fine, but when you compare them to an LP or other digital versions you realize how tweaked some of the SACD's are.

No, that is what Shites tell themselves. Folks there have stopped sipping kool-aid.

Of course if you flip through Hoffman's site everything will be blow jobs and positivity regarding his work. Thats because Hoffman and his Gorts delete negative comments and ban users who confront him. They use deceptive practices to paint a false picture. And thats just the tip of the iceberg.
