BERLIOZ, HECTOR: Romeo et Juliette (Romeo and Julia), op. 17
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa (Recorded in 1975)

"Let's hope that they will release this recording on SACD. There aren't any multi-channel albums of the work".

I produced this recording for Deutsche Grammophon. It was recorded 8-track on 1-inch tape, and I mixed it simultaneously to 2-track stereo for LP release and to 4-track surround in the same fashion as I did the Carmen, Damnation of Faust, Symphonie Fantastique and Treemonisha recordings which have just been released — that is, with 360-degree direct sound sources, rather than just hall ambiance in the side/back channels. It is an exciting performance and recording.

So it might be possible to re-release [it] in REMASTERED CLASSICS?

There are also many other legendary recordings. I hope that PENTATONE will re-release these items:

1) RACHMANINOV, SERGEI: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-4 (complete)
Tamás Vásáry (piano), London Symphony Orchestra, Yuri Ahronovitch (Recordings: 1975 & 1976 at the Watford Town Hall, London, United Kingdom)

2) BRAHMS, JOHANNES: Symphonies Nos. 1-4 (complete)
Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan (Recorded in 1978 at the Philharmonie, Berlin, Germany)

3) MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS: Symphonies Nos. 35-41
Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan (Recordings: 1975-77 at the Philharmonie, Berlin Germany)

4) BEETHOVEN, LUDWIG VAN: Missa Solemnis, Op. 123
Margaret Price, Christa Ludwig, Wieslaw Ochman, Martti Talvela, Chor der Wiener Staatsoper, Wiener Philharmoniker, Karl Böhm (Recorded in 1974 at the Grosser Saal, Musikverein, Wien, Austria)

5) MAHLER, GUSTAV: Symphony No. 1 in D major "Titan" (with "Blumine")
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa (Recorded in 1977 at the Symphony Hall, Boston, United States)

What do you think?

This was released on SHM-SACD, of course in stereo only

Mahler: Symphony No. 1 - Seiji Ozawa

Same for two of the Brahms symphonies with Karajan

Brahms: Symphonies 2 & 3 - Karajan

Yes, but it would be great to have these excellent recordings to the multi-channel SACDs. Comments?

Good news! I sent email to PENTATONE. I asked if they could re-release Rostropovich's recording of Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades". They answered:
"We asked DGG to give us the license rights for this release, but we are still waiting for their response.
As soon as the releases are confirmed, you will be able to see them on our website, under release planning".

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of this fine recording. I hope to see it here in my home in SACD format and surround sound before too long.
Thanks again.

Thanks for your fine work on behalf of my hometown band!

I wonder if you have an opinion about the Universal Japan reissues, in recent DSD remasters, of several of those BSO/Ozawa records from the seventies, such as Respighi: Pini di Roma, Feste Romane, Fontane di Roma - Ozawa andRimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade - Ozawa.

How about this?

"Mahler: Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'
Marilyn Horne, Carol Neblett, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Claudio Abbado, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Margaret Hillis (Recorded in 1976)"

Abbado's approach is very good and it would be great joy to hear it on multi-channel. Any comments?

Until we actually know what recordings were made with surround channels, it isn't particularly useful to speculate on what would/or could be released. I am sure they will be searching for materials, and I hope that some of the more idiomatic recordings from that period show up with 4 channel tapes. My personal hopes would include a number of Ozawa/Boston recordings, as they made their best recordings in this period, and several of them don't have much competition, including the DeFalla Three Cornered Hat, the Respighi Roman Trilogy and Ancient Airs and Dances, the Ives recordings, the Bartok recordings, the Stravinsky/Berg Violin Concertos with Perlman (possibly with a more natural balance?), and Schoenberg Gurrelieder. Their performances of Brahms 1 and Tchaikovsky 5 capture some really beautiful wind playing, though there is a lot of competition out there, and the BSO Chamber Players recordings of Stravinsky and Schoenberg would be wonderful to have in surround.

I also would be happy if the Giulini/Chicago Mahler 9 had a surround tape, as that is a special performance.
