good review of this in today's GUARDIAN newspaper at:

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/reviews/story/0,,1757580,00.html

though strangely only 3/5 stars?! odd that, given the very positive comments.

Hah! What do they know?

I think this is quite possibly one the greatest discs I have heard yet. Norrington manages to capture the "shock of the new" that the first audiences must have felt (and still do) perfectly and the recording is exceptional. Absolutely brilliant...

Very good review indeed of this in today's Sunday Times, though no mention is made of SACD, nor that this is a surround recording which recreates spatially what is heard in concert. The review also comments that "the orchestral playing is at once austere and warmly expressive...."

what a surprise! - i can't think of a single UK-based critic who EVER considers SACD sound properly.

most of them couldn't be bothered or don't have the equipment. most of them, i suspect, have never even heard MC SACD in action. this has been depressing me for some time now.

anyway, here's the sunday times link:

i agree with the view that this is a superb performance and recording, especially in MC format.

Could you arrange for some of these folks to visit you for a demo? It might pay handsome dividends!

Terence,

I am seriously considering purchasing this recording, but am a little cautious after having wasted money on the Spano version. Spano is a tepid, uninvolving performance not particularly well-recorded except for the brass bands, which are tremendous when properly placed in MCH.

Can you confirm that the Norrington locates the brass choirs as they should be in the front and side speakers? If it does not, I will be content to wait for a recording to come along that has proper brass placement in these key moments.

Many thanks for your view of this recording.

Sorry for butting in! The performance is (fortunately) a world away from that of Spano's and is the most involving performance I have heard of this work to date.

The brass choirs are spaced all around and clearly identifiable - magnificent! Don't hesitate.

Polly Nomial - Thank you. This will be an immediate purchase.

As of 6/14, available on Amazon.com. Fantastic sound -- coming from all sides in force, not some ambiance. (I was already going to boost my surrounds...) Norrington is a most people-oriented conductor for orchestra, choir, and audience, I've seen him connect to people so well in Carnegie Hall and in Kimmel in Philly. I love his Mozart (he told me 'it was lively, wasn't it'), -- and this requiem is not too sad either, which is great.
