I have foundation an important gap in my collection of sacds, the Beethoven violin concerto. When I read the reviews on this site, i can't find an outright recommendation. So unless there reeally is one to be found, here is an important recording yet to be made (I did notice one record that may be the deal, on Challenge, but there were some reservations. )
This is, to me, the greatest violin concerto ever written.

If so, which ones do you like? Of the ones listed here, I like the Grumiaux and the Oistrakh but there others not one SACD to be considered.

There are many great recordings of it on SACD, I don't see any reason to complain (or pay too much attention to "reviewers"). In fact, I don't know if there even is another work where the two greatest recordings of it (for me) are both on SACD -- and they even give you the best of both worlds (old school and new school)!

Just enjoy. It's seldom possible to this extent on SACD, purely musically speaking. The work itself, while causing no changes in the cosmos, is a lot of fun just to listen to.

Beethoven: Violin Concerto - Oistrakh

Beethoven/Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos - Mullova/Gardiner

You really have to hear Mullova's wrist to believe it... (it's an abnormality, one to which some specialists attribute her unique qualities as a player).

Funny I was just thinking about how there are few modern versions of this concerto on SACD, unlike the Brahms, Sibelius, etc., most are "classic" versions. Of the newer recordings, I would also recommend Mullova.

It's unfortunate that both the Oistrakh and Mullova/Gardiner recommendations are £140 each. Certainly outside my budget!!!

The Warner reissue of the Oistrakh EMI release is available for RBCD prices:

Beethoven: Violin Concerto - Oistrakh

Same recording, same remastering, same everything, different logo on cover.

The ones I have are the Grumiaux, Perlmann/Barenboim and Faust/Belohlavek, all 2 channel cd. Faust's is the one I prefer nowadays.
(Sorry for the 'foundation' in my earlier posting. Ipad spellcheck...)

Yes, of the modern non-sacd releases, I'd pick Faust/Belohlavek, too.

Any love for this one? Beethoven: Violin Concerto & Romances - Liza Ferschtman

I love it! With this and the original mc release of the Mullova in my collection I am well fixed for the Beethoven vc ( including Brautigam's version of the arrangement for piano ).
