Hi,

BDP-S470 Spesification does not mention SACD at all.

Audio Features:
Dolby® : Yes & Dolby® TrueHD bitstream out over HDMI™ (V1.3)
Dolby® True HD Bitstream Output : Yes
LPCM : Yes (multi channel decoder): Yes (HDMI™ bitstream out)
MP3 Playback : Yes (BD-R/RE/DVD+RW/+R/-RW/-R/CD-R,RW)5
dts® HD Bitstream Output : Yes
dts® Output : Yes (dts®-HD bitstream out over HDMI™)

Now is the SACD playback capability real?

I think it would cost Sony nothing to implement it
(with playback over HDMI) so it may be there as an undocumented feature.

br,

Esa

Hi Eesau,

It's on the Sony press release : http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/consumer/home_video/blu-ray_disc/release/56400.html

Not sure why it's not in the specs on Sony's site. I hope this is just an oversight as the 470 is just a 370 with the ability to upgrade the firmware to play 3D Blu-Ray discs.

You can also see the SA-CD logo in photos of the machine.

No, there is always cost involved because of dedicated hardware required in the 'front end' of the drive to decrypt the copy protection in order to merely play the disc, regardless of any 'back end' decoding of the audio.

And yes, the SACD playback is real, people in Sony have confirmed to me.

Now that we have a slew of new Universal Players, it will be very difficult to calculate how many SACD~capable playback devices are in circulation., especially worldwide. Over 1 billion served?????????

Not at all. When this thread started, there were 13 million SACD-compatible players sold worldwide:
- dedicated SACD/CD players
- SACD-compatible DVD-players
- SACD-compatible 'Home Theater Systems' (DVD players with integrated AV receivers)
That number has probably increased by only a few hundred thousand since, because the time when Sony, Philips, Pioneer and others almost routinely included SACD with in lots of mid-range products is over.

The major increase since has come from PlayStation 3. I estimate the first two generations amounted to some 7 million units. After that, SCE dropped SACD. That would mean the total installed base is now approximately 20 million. Hopefully the Oppo BD players and Sony 2010 BD range will add a few million more. Don't expect miracles from Marantz, McIntosh, Denon, Lexicon, Theta or Ayre, whose players are all priced well into the 4 digits.

Anyway, a kind gentleman at Sony has so far always kept track of these numbers. I ought to contact him again sometime soon.

ETA: a billion is the order of magnitude of the number of DVD players in the world.

I was being totally facetious. 20 million sacd~capabable players sounds about right but as you surmised, there are probably 1 billion DVD players worldwide and that's a mighty number and they're all capable of playing RBCD which is the real shame. I truly wish the numbers were transposed!

Posted that one on page 41 but with the length of this thread that's easy to overlook. I don't know where my picture went.
