An off the cuff comment, but considering what I used to pay for ONE stereo SHM~SACD ($60) when they were first introduced, this pretty comprehensive package (1 RBCD/2BD~Vs/booklet is a veritable BARGAIN.

And also to quote Grand Marshal King Ralph. There is no excuse to release any new music in anything less than 24bit these days. 16 bit is for our older people.

And this has nothing to do with stereo or multi channel, 24 bit even if 44.1Khz is an easy release. To release at 16bit is pure laziness.

Back to the Beatles we do get 24/96 with the Blu Ray. Even if it is crappy surround, it is awesome stereo.

So, Markie, is your Bicycle 16 or 24 bit?

But you're right: 16 bit IS lazy...but, UNFORTUNATELY, there are more RBCD players out there than probably any other format combined so it's that backwards compatibility issue which drives the market...even in 2015!

EVERYONE thought I was crazy investing in the Meridian 808 reference RBCD player and the Meridian SooLoos, but let me tell you these two reference units even elevate the sound of 16 bit RBCDs (and DTS 5.1 RBCD discs) to a near SACD/DVD~A level. But truth be told........NEAR is no substitute for the real deal (true hi res).

Giles Marin explains his approach to the #1s album in this BBC article - including why the surround mix is so subtle - and gives us hope for the future with this tasty quote: "If I was doing a 5.1 of the White Album, though? Let me at it!"

Derek - thanks very much. I've only quickly scanned across the article, but it looks quite interesting. When I get a bit more time, I'll read it in detail.

I might just be tempted to give this album a go - just might.

Personally, I couldn't imagine the Beatles albums/tracks being mixed in MCH-audio in any other way than subtle. The "Love" album is something slightly different though, and I was able to accept how it was presented the first moment I heard it - not that it has a particularly aggressive mix. That is an album to impress though, on so many different levels.

I purchased the CD + 2xBD boxset and watched it entirely yesterday. I was very pleased with the image restoration as many videos were in piteous condition, color revival and contrast resurection are quite impressive, and most of all, all film artefacts (dust, stripes) have been carefully removed. Of course the result is still imperfect given the age of the source material, and let us remember filming devices were not as sophisticated at that time as they are now. This blu-ray set is just the best you will ever get.

Now, the sound really was the slap in my face. I listened in stereo PCM 96/24, for so far multichanel equipment has remained a project for me. I have been told the MC mix is very discrete, as a Beatles MC mix should be, might I say. Most of the Beatles songs only have 4 tracks. The stereo program is true magic to me. I never purchased a Beatles digital album before because the red and blue compilation had disappointed me so much, loud and compressed and edgy and shrill. Yes, it is still loud on this blu-ray set, but at least not compressed and very balanced. Yesterday, I finally listened to the Beatles the way I wanted them to sound... at last ! That was worth waiting for, and now I hope their albums will be remastered in high-resolution as well, SA-CD or BD, whatever, as long as it's hi-rez and well done !

I only watched disc 1 in its entirety tonight and was likewise impressed with the restored videos (although a lot of them are plain silly....even for the 60's). My advice on the audio....forget the 5.1 "remix?" Stick with the stereo option and play it in DIRECT mode for maximum sonic effect.

The included booklet and packaging was likewise quite nice and informative as to the origin of the videos.

I also listened to the lovely Steve Wilson 5.1 remix of XTC's Oranges and Lemons. A lot of the QQers complained about a brightness in the treble but I found the entire BD~A to be a sonic delight. I was NOT familiar with this album but heartily recommend a purchase.

Happy to have the Beatles 1+. Was it everything one could possibly want .......that would have to be a negative but it didn't exactly break the bank (I paid $43US delivered) and I suppose it will have to do until you know what......the definitive 5.1 remasters of their entire catalogue.

Let's face it. Those who have heard the sonic wonder called LOVE were expecting more of the same but alas, NOT the case. Too bad George Martin himself could not participate in this endeavor as I believe he might have taken a more aggressive approach to the surround mixing of the Beatles 1+.

Good. Now let's hope that seem decent and not overrated music will pop up from the 60s and 70s in multi channel.
Just my opinion.

Amen to that, FM.

There has been some dissension concerning Audio Fidelity's 4.0 and 5.1 choices.........but I have absolutely NO beef with their releases considering what they're up against.......unusable master tapes and reluctant artists and record labels.

2016 should be VERY interesting.

Bring it ON! A revival of the fittest.

Ah ah, that's an understatement :-)

One could only imagine if Italian Film Director Federico Fellini was tasked with shooting Beatle's Videos....he probably would've fired Yoko and inserted Sophia Loren or Anita Ekberg into the mix.......The Ballad of Sophia and John or La Dolce Ringo! ;-)
