This looks good. Top hits for lute but I never tire of this stuff. Some sound samples on Linn Records' web site. I just ordered a copy from MDT (http://www.mdt.co.uk) ... search for "Nigel North" as it's not on their SACD list.

thanks stephen, i also love North's musicianship, and treasure his complete Bach suites set so i'll look for the SACD. It may be worth noting that I recently got an email from Linn announcing the release of this disc (as i've bought North recordings from them before) and that the press release totally failed to mention that it was available in SACD.

Mind you, Linn have some strange SACD policies, - their "older" SACDs retail at £18 on their web site, whereas "newer" ones sell for £12. Amazon.uk, however, sell all Linn SACD's, regardless of release date, at 12.99. When i commented on this to Linn, I got a reply stating that this is current pricing policy (pretty obvious I'd have thought) and may change as the market gets more competitive. Strange policy!! especially as Channel classics sell for £12 on amazon and chandos for £15. You'd have thought that was competition enough.

I encourage all SACDinfo readers to put pressure on Linn by either emailing them or boycotting purchase of their £18 releases and getting them from amazon instead. If you get on of their (excellent) newer releases from Linn, let them know that you're boycotting the older ones.

Just a short follow-up to say that I got myself a copy and like it. It's an interesting enough mix of more popular pieces and others less well known (to me at least). Some of the pieces are back to back with works on the same theme by other composers of the era. I found the playing style really rewards concentration. A good contrast to Paul O'Dette's very fine "Robin Hood" on similar territory. The recording is close and detailed, similar to having the performer in your room.

It's a single-inventory disc at near CD pricing. We're going to see a lot more of these ... with better sound on offer for those prepared to make the effort.

stephen, just to let you know that instead of the Nigel North disc I bought the new Dowland disc by the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra, with Rolf Lislevand on lute, and am very pleased with it. Have left review.

Selected as an "Editor's Choice" in this month's Gramophone:

"Superb playing and programming – North confirms his place among the lute greats

"There’s something wonderfully engaging about Nigel North’s lute playing, not surprising perhaps from someone who claims to be largely self-taught. There is an ease about his approach to this repertoire that speaks of long and detailed study of the period and its musicians, but with never a hint of the academic or desk-bound. In North’s hands, this music speaks so directly that the messages implicit on so many of these pieces emerge with a clarity of poise that really draws the listener in."
