I'm new on this forum and have my first question:
What about the 2-channel SACD sound of this disc?

Post by Tireguy April 11, 2004 (2 of 36)
My system is strictly stereo and this disc sounds fantastic! When folks tell me "only discs recorded in DSD sound good" I put this disc in and tell them it was recorded in 1982. Don't hesitate getting this one, I had never heard of Roxy music prior to this SACD(give me a break I was born in 1981) not only are the sonics incredible but the music is really good- IMO this disc deserves the reputation it has recieved.

Fully agree, having played both the 2 Channel and Multi Channel flavours of Avalon, this is the best non classical SACD your good money can buy.

RECOMENDED !!

I bought this disc earlier when it came out, but only recently I have foud time to listen to it in MCh. Wow, The overall atmosphre changed. The album in MCh is completely different experience in comparison with stereo, which iś also very good, but not as good as in MCh. I am mainly into classical rep, but this one is best of the best on this format.

I hope you'll forgive my input, as I've only listened to this album in MCH. Over the past few years, I kept reading recomendations of this SACD, and initially thought it wouldn't quite be my style of music. Anyway, after thinking about buying it over a couple of years, I finally gave in and got it a few months ago. Apart from giving myself a pleasant surprise and actually liking the muscial style (that always helps!), the quality of the recording is also very high.

It's great to read what the first two replies have said about the stereo option, and hope that this gives you confidence. I find the MCH mix absolutely beautiful, so wouldn't really have any doubts about the 2CH version. I'd rather listen to a good stereo mix, than be "forced" to listen to a poor MCH mix. That is one of the joys of this format, often being able to choose between stereo and MCH.

If you like Avalon try the other Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry discs, Roxy Music Greatest Hits (Stereo only) Frantic , and Boys and Girls. Greatest hits as a compliation is IMHO variable, Frantic can't comment don't own (yet) Boys and girls almost on a par with Avalon for sound quality enjoy !!!!

Here's a cool article about the recording and 5.1 remixing of Avalon, courtesy of peterzach over on QQ.

It would be nice if Clearmountain & Davies got involved in some more of Roxy's 5.1 mixes.

Great article, Brett. Thanks for sharing.

Now onto THE pressing question: To buy into the Roxy Music Stereo SHM~SACDs or wait until the box sets come out with 'possibly' the 5.1 remixes which are already in the can.

After my bad experience with the dismal SHM~SACD of Songs From The Big Chair and the almost immediate superior 5.1 Steve Wilson remix, my instincts tell me to wait.

What's your take on the subject, Brett?

The only recent SHM-SACD that I regret not acting quickly on is Supertramp: Breakfast in America. With these SHM-SACDs, I usually see 1 or 2 pop up in the used section here in Tokyo...a few weeks after their release. But... no sign of Supertramp anywhere. :-/

This experience made me act quickly on the 2 Steely Dan releases. And then... low and behold, I saw used copies of both Ecstasy and Preztel Logic last weekend. LOL! But... I'm a huge fan of SD and those 2 SHM-SACDs sound so warm and natural. No regrets... at least until a surround mix comes out...which will help separate and balance the musicians into an even more natural soundstage.

But... I am in agreement with you. I think we can wait a bit on Roxy. Let's hear what Adam has to say when he is at liberty to share more of his invaluable info. From what he hinted at earlier, I got the impression that not all of those Roxy albums have been remixed in 5.1. So, we might be buying some the SHM-SACDs after all. Is that how you understood it?

I, likewise, jumped on the Steely Dan SHM~SACDs (and NO regrets there).

But as Adam (fredblue) intimated, there will be a LOT of surprises next year from Universal on BD~A.

Hopefully, like the 100 upcoming SHM~SACD reissues, wouldn't be surprised if there will be a repressing of the Supertramp SHM~SACD.

Patience IS and will ALWAYS be a virtue, Mr. B!

And to be perfectly honest, Brett, after hearing Clearmountain's superb 5.1 remix of Avalon and Bryan Ferry's solo albums in 5.1.......Roxy Music in Stereo is akin to plain vanilla ice cream.....without the bright red cherry on the top!
