What I find interesting about the recent reviews of Hahn, is that neither she nor Mutter are having their music released in SACD format anymore, that I am aware of. A brief burst of brilliance - and we are left with Julia Fischer, who is good, but I miss her companions, especially Mutter releasing a whole series of Mozart in CD form only. And, I will not buy anything which is not multichannel hi rez.

I too refrain from purchasing anything not in SACD - But I really think we are very fortunate regarding Julia Fischer. In my opinion she is a more complete artist than either Hahn or Mutter. Compare the Mutter Tchaikovsky with Fischer. Mutter becomes coarse even vulgar. Fischer is elegant from beginning to end, as well as exciting. I have heard Fischer live on five occasions. I have heard Hahn live maybe 9 times and will hear her again in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory in Boston this coming Friday. She is a favorite of mine, but simply doesn't have the tonal resources of Fischer. Both are outstanding musicians however, and neither is anything but technically superb. Fischer currently is my all time favorite.

Dear Windsurfer: I agree that we are fortunate that Julia Fischer is still releasing very good music in SACD. My lament is that Hahn, Mutter, Mitori, and Mullova (at least) apparently are not. I expect that is a conscious marketing decision on the part of their record labels; and IMO it is an unfortunate one.

FWIW - the Midori SACD's that I have (the Mozart, the French recital, and the Mendelssohn/Bruch concertos) are all excellent. I too am on the Julia Fischer bandwagon, but Midori is a very fine violinist.

I hadn't heard that Sony Classical was not ever going to issue further SACDs. (The very recent Jay Greenburg disc would seem to refute any such notion.) I am sure there will be future Midori SACDs. The likelihood of seeing any by Mutter or Hahn in the near future seems small however. Do letter writing campaigns emanating from here ever get off the ground?

I wonder how Hilary would react to having her agent receive a few hundred letters requesting her to insist on her recordings being in DSD and issued on SACD?; or Vadim Repin, or Helene Grimaud, or Nelson Freire for that matter! If enough "Universal Classics" artists were to lobby for this, it might happen. It would certainly give the bad guys something of a headache!

I don't think any label has stated that they are never going to release SACDs again. The number of discs speaks for itself. It doesn't make a difference whether a label releases zero or two SACDs per year. Deutsche Grammophon also released one SACD last year (for whatever reason, contractual or market testing). It doesn't change the fact that they are not actively supporting the format. The same is true for Sony.

Actually Claude, I remember Universal Classics saying they were going to a single release policy which excluded the simultaneous release of SACDs and RBCDs. Sony has never made any such announcment. As for Sony's failure to support SACD, how are they faring with the release of newly recorded classical rbcds ?? Isn't it just about the same? Minimal support of classical music, minimal support of SACD.

What I find particularly galling, are messages from sellers trying to pursuade me by buy Mutter's recent Mozart series, which if released in SACD would be an easy purchase - but not now. And the same goes for Diana Krall - who had some wonderful early releases in hi rez format.

I'd buy Rachel Podger's ongoing cycle for the sonatas:
Mozart: Complete sonatas for keyboard and violin Vol. 1 - Cooper/Podger
Mozart: Complete sonatas for keyboard and violin Vol. 2 - Cooper/Podger
Mozart: Complete sonatas for keyboard and violin Vol. 3 - Cooper/Podger

and this for the trio's:
Mozart: Piano Trios - Haydn Trio Eisenstadt

Wonderful musicianship and glorious sound.

Thanks for the recommendations. I already have them, and I agree.
