Maybe because there is no copy protection for high resolution files, which in the case of high-demand pop music could be an invitation to piracy?

I thought of that. If you look at current RBCDs and DVD-Audio discs, you can copy them easily. I'm sure something could be done to put in copy protection if that was what was required.

RBCD files have never had copy protection, but they are not the highest resolution. DVD audio is copy protected unless the producer includes files for purposes of copying (e.g.,FLAC and MP3). But, do the DVD audio media provide high resolution files for copying? CD quality is the highest I've seen on a DVD audio for copying. Of course, there are higher quality downloads available, but I'm not aware that this extends much, if any, beyond classical titles.

Without discussing the details here, I believe DVD-Audio copy protection was cracked the better part of a decade ago. While it does raise legal issues, I don't think the owners care much if people are just ripping their own disc.

Yes, DVD copy protection has been "cracked," as you put it. Same with bluray, which provides much better sound. You can bet that all copyright owners care about you ripping a disk for whatever purpose. The distinction is that if you are ripping for your own use, you are unlikely to be caught.

Ok, which still doesn't make it a problem for the record producers to put their recordings on a USB. Chandos did it for a while. I would like some of their recordings on a USB stick in 24/96 resolution.

According to Amazon:

"A specially designed Flash interface has been installed, and the 16GB USB's audio and visual contents will be provided in FLAC 44.1 Khz 24 bit and MP3 320 Kbps formats, fully compatible with both PC and Mac."

Physical selling is sinking out of sight, and were it not for the downloading and lots of radio transmission fees, we could pack up and start selling baked beans instead. Eventually the question is going to be whether or not to rely on high-res downloading in stereo AND surround and only release on CD for the vast majority that doesn't care about the bitrates and sampling frequencies. The extra costs for releasing physical SACD:s are, economically and financially speaking, NOT defendable in today's market - I am just so bloody stubborn and wishing to serve up the highest quality. When, very soon now - beta-testing in progress - we can serve up high-res surround downloading files (at no extra charge and much cheaper than physical), there may very well be a major change in BIS's release policy. But we're not there yet.

Robert

I am sorry to hear the challenges you're facing with still putting out SA-CDs Robert. Your efforts are, however, still very much appreciated by me at least. I have two more of your SA-CDs winging their way to me at the moment and I doubt they will be the last.

24/48 I believe. Still better than 16/44.1. And it does sound better too.

I prefer physical discs. I like something in my hands and a booklet. They also have a secondhand value.

I do download if the cost is considerably less than the disc or I am unsure about recording and it is cheaper to download so the risk is less.

Incidentally, too many downloads lack a booklet and informative track listings. eClassical does it right.

I stopped downloading for a while when my Apple laptop stopped talking to my Marantz SA-11S3 after a soft wear update. Several months later after promises from both companies that they would solve it in a future update I gave up and bought a Hugo so am back downloading again.
