I prefer physical discs. I like something in my hands and a booklet. They also have a secondhand value.

Let me tell you about a friend who just last week lost his entire music collection with an OS up-grade on his pc. This is true and he is as close as a man can be to being in tears.

He just received a lecture from me about the wisdom of buying physical discs.

Japan's not going to close their factories. There's still a lot of interest in physical discs there. People still don't like to download or stream in Japan (IMO).

Not only are our Japanese friends thoughtful and wise but they always take the long view of events.

I think it is wise to point out as with everything you store digitally,it is mandatory to backup!
I keep no music at all,on my main computer hardrive.
My main Macbook pro has only got a 500gigabyte SSD hardrive and would have been full by now.
And the one I am typing this on has only got a 250gigabyte spinning harddrive.
My music is stored on three different Lacie rugged hardrives and I always backup and add every new purchase on the portable and one stationary separate harddrive to be on the safe side.
As far as the wisdom of buying physical discs goes, in my case only one of my two SACD players still plays SACDs and only very reluctantly I have to say.
And if you damage or lose an SACD, you have to buy a new one.
From most download sites you have a least 4 more downloads stored on your account. And some like eclassical unlimited times I think.
I have only had to resort to downloading a title again for free a couple of times in 5 years.

Besides if one really wants to listen to the masterfiles at their very best,no SACD player I have heard is quite as good as digital files via DAC imo.
And wow how good a cover like the one on BIS's latest Respighi album looks when displayed on a big screen instead of on a puny SACD.

Quelle horreur! But. . .

As Chris (above) says, when a large portion of your music library consists of computer files, backups are your friend. My own storage and backup regimes are similar to his. Basically, one has to get comfortable with new ways of thinking.

I have become very unwell thinking about that.

If you have downloaded from my site, you can re-download as many times as you like. So, if you bought from there, no back-up necessary (except for convenience's sake).

Good point. (And much appreciated BTW!) But not all sites are as enlightened as yours! ;-)

Well, since I have been pronounced dead or at least "no recovery possible" twice, and still put in my 11 hours a day, 7 days a week, I am planning for just that. Hope this won't turn out to be famous last words.

Robert
