Thanks, Robert. I have noticed Amazon's pricing policy on electronics also seems inconsistent, which makes me wonder whether there is some kind of escalator that kicks in when stocks are low. Still a good source for music though, and I'd certainly miss them if they weren't there.

It is a September release and will appear on MDT's website in due course.

Thanks, I look forward to purchasing it as soon as it is available. I like to keep the Martin Frost collection upto date!

I know you don't have any control over pricing at that point, but gouging does record labels no favours at a time when money is tight everywhere.

From a US perspective it's not just Amazon, some other vendors are pricing discs in a way that's impossible to understand. For instance if you go to CD Universe and search on sacd "recent releases" you'll find the BIS Walton Symphonies for about $18 but the BIS Faure/Durufle Requiems for about $45 (why it's listed as a recent release I can't explain). They also have a number of titles on Linn for almost 50 bucks a disc and one recent Triton release for a truly eye popping $70. It's beyond me why anyone thinks they'll sell anything at those prices when various UK sources such as Crochet, MDT, and Presto provide fine service and much more attractive pricing, especially for those of us fortunate enough to be excused from VAT.

There are two, and sometimes three, versions of each BIS title - for the US, Europe and Japan. If you follow the links from here it will generally point to the cheapest version offered by each linked vendor, namely:

Fauré, Duruflé: Requiem - Malmberg

Personally, I am a supporter of free markets. If Amazon wants to charge an outrageous price - more power to 'em. As usual, buyer beware. Amazon isn't the only online source for music.

Does that mean if your gas or electricity supplier decides to quadruple its price this winter you'd be happy to cough up?

I thought not.

Seriously though, in a free market pricesd are determined by supply and demand. In the case of this DSCH set there is no shortage of supply, according to Robert, so there should be no need to hike the price.

As krisjan said, Amazon isn't the only music retailer.

Please don't obfuscate - I was not talking about utilities.

Ah, but you were talking about the free market, and that governs the supply of essential services as well. You either support the principle of a free market or you don't. That's not obfuscation, it'd elucidation :)

I guess some folks can only think in black and white...
