Anyone familiar with this record?

Yep. A marvellous collection of songs wonderfully reproduced in 5-channel mono. The normal 2-channel mono is great also, but I prefer the surround mix. But you do get the exact same information in all channels and I am grateful that Membran did not remix thm into some fake stereo or fake surround.
Buy and enjoy.

Excellent 2-disc compilation with remarkable sound (some obviously from vinyl sources). Best $10.98 I ever spent!

I ran some 88.2/24 rips of this album through a spectogram - my suspicions were confirmed! The SACD layer is sourced from standard 44.1khz CD audio - there's nothing over 20khz.

Considering the budget price and "?' sources and the period in which these tunes were recorded, they sound pretty darn good.....this disc is out of print and fetching much higher prices .......

Sure, I would prefer it if Analogue Productions would access the master analogue tapes and run it through the Grimm Audio Converter but I really doubt that's even a remote possibility.

But then stranger things have happened!

Yes - I own this SACD. I guess I've had it for a few years now, and am happy I bought it. I bought mine from somehwere in Germany (probably Amazon.de or Amazon UK from a German seller), and wouldn't have paid much over £10 for it. It was well worth it, and am very happy with the audio quality.

I haven't checked them all, but it looks like the recordings on this sampler are in the public domain in Europe (more than 50 years old).

Membran sells a lot of other public domain reissues covering various labels. Without a licensing agreement, they can't have access to master tapes, so all that's left to them is to copy the music from the best existing sources available to them, which in most cases are CDs. That's the usual procedure for public domain labels.

It's an unusual idea to put these CD rips onto SACD (even multichannel, when the source material is mono), but apparently some SACD fans fall for it.

It was well worth the $11 (US) I paid for it but certainly NOT $256 which is the current asking price from the same Amazon.com!

Yes, I agree.

One thing I have just noticed looking at the Amazon UK and Amazon.de sites using the links here, is that both sites erroneously state that this album has one disc. Unless I'm very lucky, my version has two SACDs. So that makes the price I paid even better. A lot of the tracks on this album sound a lot better than I remember any of the vinyl versions I once owned sounding. I know this sort of thing can be hard to remember/judge though - but the my logic (perhaps not totally watertight) in buying the album was that I'm unlikely to find these tracks sounding better elsewhere. I'm very happy with the album.
