The region coding issue is overplayed. When I bought my first DVD player in December 2000, it was not region free.

In 2001, you could get better performing players for half the money AND that were region free.

The same will happen with Blu Ray. So stop boring me with this discussion already.

;-)

Please suggest to me some "region free" dvd players! Maybe here in the US it is different, but it was explained to me that all players sold in this country must be set up for region 1, but you may as a user change that to another region - up to 5 times then it locks in on your last choice.

In the EU most players are sold with two varieties: Region coded (cheaper) or Multi-region. I would be surprised if it was not possible to purchase a similar machine in the US. However, no Blu-Ray machine is currently multi-region (I imagine it's too early in the development cycle for this).

The "5 changes and it locks" is something found on many PC DVD drives however.

It's harder to think of a DVD player in the UK that is NOT region free.

The vast majority play any region DVD out of the box, and the rest can be made region free using a few button presses, either as a not-very-hidden hack, or from the official menus.

I dare say that this will be the case with Blu Ray within 12 months. In fact, give it a couple of months (at most) and Blu Ray copy protection will be hacked. From my personal point of view, the onyl positive I can see from this is to store them to a hard drive for easy access. I doubt intiial hacks will retain full lossless soudn quality though.

That's why you buy two DVD drives, set one to 1 and another to 2.

With DVD there were 8 regions, with Blu-ray there are only 2 (as "C" doesn't count) and Japan and NOrth America are in the same region.

Plus it is mandated that any pressings of a title after 12 months must be "ALL REGION" coded, which means they can plan on any player. Adding to that, the majority of catalogue titles are not region coded to begin with.

...and with SACD there's only ONE!

You can but from anywhere.

If Warner Bros. can support Blu-Ray (A Sony product), isn't it time for some Warner Bros. SACDs? After all its been years since they released any DVD-Audios.

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other...absolutely nothing. That's like asking why dogs can't produce eggs.

FD, still pontificating about the differences between US and Japanese record companies? BTW, I do have the Blue Jays Open Reel Quadriphonic version in dolby b encoded format. Will shortly be getting my Teac up and running w/ outboard dolby b decoder (8 analogue wires needed). Looks to be in good shape but I hope it doesn't suffer from print through since it hasn't been played in years! I have roughly 75 Quad Open Reels which are scattered about including some of Charles Gerhardt's classic Movie scores (RCA) in dolby b, also. I'm sure they will sound a bit "hissy" and wonder if the Teac will even work (Also have a Revox A77 with dolby b and 15" reels). Those were the days!
