Soooo, anyone attend these performances (of the 3rd)? Is this going to be worth investigating? I must admit that I love Gergiev's 1st and 6th.

Of Course it is "worth investigating".

I have been Mahlered up past my eyeballs but Gergiev is one of the world's leading musicians. Curiosity alone should make it "worth investigating". Unless you are "allergic" to Mahler that is.

Do I wish he had done something else not already on sacd? Yes. Do I have a list of things I wish he had done instead? Yes!

Will I buy this? Yes! Do I have to explain further why I think you should also?

Gergiev's Mahler although often breathtakingly frenetic lacks any sense of a sympathetic understanding of Mahler as a person I am not convinced that Gergiev has not fallen into the old trap of assuming that Mahler's music is all about sound architecture, experimentation and dramatic effect which emphatically it is not. Note also that The Gramophone is also unsympathetic to Gergiev's playing. One suspects that this series will not be remembered as one of the all time classics.

My own feeling is that Gergiev has one approach to all music.. get to the end as quickly and noisily as possible. Witness his Tchaikovsky's with the Wiener Philharmoniker

Don't believe what I've been written in my review. I have listened this several times now and I changed my mind. The interpretation is absolutely the most powerful ever! 5.0 multi-channel is also very good. Any comments?
