Discussion: Smetana, Sibelius: String Quartets - Kocian Quartet

The good news: a contemporary recording of the Smetana, by the excellent Kocian Quartet.

The bad news: more Sibelius, already fullsomely recorded.

I suppose 'the obvious thing', recording both Smetanas, was vetoed by The Marketing Guys who suppose that two composers equals twice the audience.... Well, would it not have been better to pair Smetana with CATS or MY FAIR LADY?

The Sibelius quartet is a fine piece and a welcome addition to the SA-CD catalogue.

Like you, Beagle, I'd rather have both Smetanas. But that didn't stop me from putting this on my wishlist.

The Kocian is the top Praga ensemble in my book!

Oops! please pardon my senior's moment.... All-knowing Zeus is quite right:

The 'fullsome' quartets I was thinking of are the NIELSEN* quartets. SIBELIUS' 'Voces intimae' is a lyric gem which goes quite well with Smetana's 'From My Life'. Perhaps both quartets, packaged with Janacek's 'Intimate Letters' would make a nice thematic album: 'World's Most Romantic Quartets'. My preference remains Smetana with Smetana, Sibelius with Sibelius -- but I'd probably buy anything by the Kocianova.

* recorded by the Unge Danske Strygekvartet on DaCapo. The cover-art of those discs is quite beautiful, but the Young Danes are suffocated by Neilsen's airless music.
