Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye out for the DVD-A and perhaps the Wyn Morris release on BDA too :)

Just so you know, the Wyn Morris version is of an earlier edition of Cooke's work...part of the excitement of Rattle's Berlin version is that it was I believe the first recording of the final version of Cooke's edition. The differences aren't always major, but it's something to be aware of.

Thanks for the extra info regarding these versions. I'll start with the Zinman I've already ordered and if it disappoints, will probably give Sieghart SACD or Wyn Morris BDA release a go...but the Rattle/BPO DVD-A is on my radar no matter what.

As new to Mahler as I am, I'm pleased to say I liked Zinman's M10. Having never heard any other version, I've nothing to compare it to, but I can get along with it for sure.

What I can say about the music though is, it doesn't seem as dark and foreboding as some of Mahler's other works, but this may well be down to the interpretation and direction of Zinam, I don't know, but on the whole, it seemed like a jolly old affair in comparison to his other symphonies.

As expected however, the surround mix if fairly passive and inconspicuous, so I'll keep an eye out for the Rattle/BPO DVD-A to experience a more discrete surround mix.

I do not find it interesting - the reviewer does not like the completion and gives us little other basis for his views about the recording

I suspect he is "santa fe listener" on Amazon.com who admires Gergiev the master of none.
