An older recording recently discovered turns out to be a hidden gem for the stunning recording quality alone. The singing is rather good as well. I do not know this opera particularly well mainly I guess because everything I have read about Tchaikovsky flirtation with the genre has been rather dismissive.

This highlights disc has reminded me to take it more seriously. If you can find a copy, treat yourself, it is one of the best SACDs I've come across - from the heady days of DSD recoding at the turn of the last decade - and will not disappoint.

In fact expect to be delighted. It's spinning most days at this house.

Actually, Eugene Onegin is considered to be a great opera, and Queen of Spades is generally thought to be on close to the same level. Tchaikovsky's other operas are not performed much, but I have seen several of them at the Met, and they were worth seeing and hearing.
