Yes purely through HDMI, the only analogue I use is between the pre-out of the Sony DA5400ES into my integrated amplifier. The BDP-S5000 at £599.95 is available from Hyperfi Eastern Ave. East Romford Nr North St. If sold out I know where one can be bought at the same price.

Excellent thanks, will give it some thought.

I hate to spoil the party, but Amazon US is showing a like new (open box unit) of the Sony you and disbeliever are ruminating over for $99.50 + shipping. Of course it's not intended for European distribution but I would hesitate to pay 700 pounds for it, either!

And BTW, according to some poster's reviews on Amazon who do own the unit, it seems to be problematic so it's up to you, Nagraboy (very slow loading times and complete unit failure are two commonly cited negatives...but in all fairness, there are some positive reviews, as well).

The UK reviews are extremely positive with no reported failures that I have seen. UK prices are usually up to 40% more than US ones which is why the rip-off manufacturers call us Treasure Island we also suffer from mad crazy Governments of whatever political persuasion . At the moment we have the Cameroon Clegg Clarke coalition of traitors but thats another story. . I can not imagine the US Amazon one for $99.50 + shipping to be in perfect condition with a warranty. Finally I did not pay £700 the price on UK Amazon who say it is shipped from Hyperfi but only £599.95. The original UK List was £1200 approx. The picture is absolutely fabulous via HDMI and the sound is also very good if not excellent now the player has begun to settle. My initial reaction was I agree not so positive but I am happy with it now. P.S. Amazom.Com price used $1,109.00

How to RIP BR audio.

Thanks, that makes my point. Ripping a BluRay requires specialized (and illegal in the U.S.) software and a large amount of manual labor to create and name individual tracks.

Another benefit to including files besides ease of use is that you aren't limited to the audio formats that BluRay supports. No need to convert 88.2K to 96K, for example.

Getting back to the original topic…
I have compared Blu-Ray audio to SACD with the mch tracks of 2L’s commendable “Flute Mystery”. The SACD is played back on my Denon 2930 via DenonLink3, and the BD on my Samsung P3600 via HDMI. To my ears both formats sound excellent and quite similar.
However, I am unable to get the Samsung player to display the BD track #s on its front panel; all I get is the total elapsed time. Is this a quirk of this particular 2L recording? Or is it a limitation of this Samsung model? Or is it a limitation of BD-audio in general? We wouldn’t, of course, tolerate a format that required a TV for us to determine the track #!

I have had difficulty with Blu-Ray discs that have nothing to do with firmware updates. It seems that there is considerable variation with disc menus , which are solved by accessing via the remote in the correct order that requires experimentation, there is no standard and this can be very frustrating. Some 2L discs play immediately others do not. I had a problem with Blu-Ray La Traviata excellent disc sold by Amazon UK for only £6.40 had to ask Sony how to get the disc to play in surround.. disc played immediately in Stereo but I initially could not access Audio to get mch. Strangely using a Denon BD player the AUDIO symbol appeared on the Disc Menu,

This is an abiding problem with BRDs, particularly movies, as the producers of each release create unique menu interfaces. There is a standard developing for BD-Audio discs which uses the 4 color buttons on the remote for direct access to the available audio tracks.

Hi Kal, Seems to be a misunderstanding here, the color buttons are for the sound modes not specific audio title tracks ?
I would be interested to know which of the following sounds best from a BD disc: 5.1 LPCM, dts-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround, Dolby True HD 5.1 , Dolby Digital 5.1, Thanks

Paul Miller in HFN said that he often finds when measuring BD players that they give lower jitter over HDMI when playing 'packed' formats like DTS Master Audio and Dolby True HD than straight-through 5.1 PCM from the same disc.
