May be a dumb question but can Is there a SACD layer on Dual Discs ?

The only one I've got is Kind Of Blue - Miles Davis, and it doesn't.

I think it was invented by the DVD Forum people, as a way of trying to get people into DVD-A, as a last hope for the format.

Sony released some DualDiscs, but they (understandably and true to form) did not include a hi-rez DVD-A version of the music, just a Dolby Digital 5.1 and 24/48 stereo track. That's the story with the one mentioned above...

Besides, a Hybrid SACD already includes a CD layer as well as 2ch SACD (99.9% of the time), so a DualDisc SACD would be pointless.

DualDisc IS a dead format, unlike our SACD!

Harmonia Mundi still uses DualDisc. Faust/Melnikov Beethoven sonatas for v&p and Melnikov Shosty P&Fs sets have promotional DVD-document on one of the discs (DualDisc). All of the cd players I have tried have great difficulties reading the cd layer and all of my dvd-player have similar difficulties with dvd-layer.

DualDisc is a CD/DVD hybrid. Some DualDiscs have DVD-A content, but none has a SACD side.

Since I was a huge advocate of DVD~A before switching over to SACD, I have a very large collection of those "flipper" discs........The OPPOs have No problem playing the CD side and the DVD~A (or DD 5.1) layers and my Meridian 800 still glides through the DVD~A sides. Their major problem was thickness......they were not standard thicknesses and were problematic in most RBCD players. But they did offer video content and some DVD sides only offered that....that on today's upsampling Oppos look quite nice.

If you want to experiment and have an OPPO, some of them can be had for a song on Amazon from third party vendors or if you want to augment your hi~rez collection with selections not available on SACD, there were a number of discs from Universal and Silverline and a few from Warners which offered 96/24 resolution, some in 5.1 MLP form and some in 96/24 stereo. Sound wise, some of them were truly excellent!

Thanks folks.....I am new to this forum and very new to SACD...

you will all be proud of me.....

I snagged a Pioneer Elite SACD player over the holidays and now I can finally hear all my hybrid CD's in SACD......

This forum is helpful and I am glad SACD is still alive......

Welcome!

I gathered from your screen name you might be into progressive rock (and would draw your attention to the recent reissues of King Crimson on DVD-Audio) but i notice from your blog your taste is a lot more varied than that, and we've even got some interesting overlap e.g. Roxy Music and especially William Orbit (whose work I think lends itself almost more than any other for multichannel but sadly none of it has appeared yet on SACD or even DVD).

IMO, the five King Crimson DVD~A reissues are revelations and models of how a tastefully enveloping surround mix should sound (done by Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree.......whose albums are also available on DVD~A (CD/DVD~A).

Will be looking forward to the next set of KC reissues ........

I only have in the Court of the Crimson King by Steve Wilson and it is amazing...so too is Mike Oldfields Ommadawn on DVD Audio.........huge 5.1 mix on that one too if oyu are into 5.1....

I am not a huge 5.1 geek and prefer good ol 2 channel stereo with great sound of course....

Yeah I love prog but also genres too pop....Jazz... fusion....psych....60's 70's even some 80's........

I was surprised how many hybrid SACD's i had in my collection and i guess i knew one day I would snag a SACD player...funny how i waited for 10 years and now am once again going against the mass trend of small, light compressed downloadable music.....

i went out and bought a heavy lug SACD player that plays discs that are now only made in japan......

:)

For what it's worth, both Donald Fagen's 'The Nightfly' and Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms' were both issued as Dual Discs that included the actual 5.1 & 2.0 24 bit DVD-A layers on the backside of the CD. 'The Nightfly' was also issued as a standalone DVD-A, but the Dual Disc is perhaps a better value since you have the CD side as well to enjoy. Several audio enthusiasts have stated that they prefer the fidelity of the DVD-A version of 'Brothers In Arms' over the SACD.

It's also worth noting that the UK pressings of the Talking Heads series are being sold as two separate discs (CD & DVD-A) vs. the US pressing which is a true singular Dual Disc so as to reduce the chance of damaging both sides as well as increase the playability of certain brands/models that sometimes can't read Dual Discs correctly.
