These were memorable performances from years past and have been transferred beautifully. Buying this disc was an act of faith really as they were recorded in the 16/44 low-res digital era so my expectations were not high but what a very pleasant surprise. There is a real sparkle about the re-masters that almost entirely convinces.

OK, there is room for criticism - as in the amorphous nature of the orchestral support - but the essential piano role has been brilliantly recreated and reminds one, if reminder needed, that Argerich was a class or three beyond many of today's so-called keyboard starlet's.

Not cheap certainly, but I will try the Chopin coupling on the strength of this.

The information available online says they were recorded in 1998, when 24/96 was already the standard PCM recording resolution

Indeed. Do not assume all previous CD releases come from 16/44.1 masters by default. Even some early digital recordings were recorded at a slightly higher resolution than that. As Claude points out, 24/96 was the norm well over 10 years ago. For example, Chandos' Jansons Tchaikovsky series is 24/96.

Only the new Jansons rereleases of the Tchaikovsky was remastered at that level. The older release put out about 1984 is the standard 16/44.1

I've been very curious about this as Chandos have just issued them as a 24-96 download. As they were recorded in the early 80's, my hope was that they might have been analogue recordings, as I am unaware of hi-res masters from that era. Anyone have any info on this?

This was already discussed in a recent thread about hi-rez downloads. The 24/96 Tchaikovsky downloads are problematic indeed, since they are sourced from a 24/96 remaster (made for the CD reissue) of a 16/44 recording. Of course the recording resolution limits the sonic result, compared to a 24/96 recording or a 24/96 transfer of an analogue recording. IMHO, they should indicate this limitation on the download page.

The details for the 1st Symphony state clearly it's a 24/96 recording.

"Originally recorded in: 24Bit 96Khz"

The 5th is even earlier

"Originally recorded in: 24Bit 96Khz" can't be true, that resolution wasn't available in the mid-80s.

I think the person who made the listing took the remastering resolution and listed it wrongly as the recording resolution.

Hi Peter

I order from CD Japan as single discs and ensure each is sent by the standard slow post (500 Yen) (1-3 weeks) so as not to attract undue attention here at import. The full price info is shown honestly on the postal slip attached to the front of the box at source.

So far, not one of my consignments has been intercepted for taxes and duties although notionally they go above the threshold amount.

John
