I don't often watch TV in the morning but today I did and I saw a familiar face. It took a few moments for me to realise it was Iván Fischer getting interviewed, in Dutch. In the interview, he explains the music of Béla Bartók.

The VPRO TV programme can be viewed here. The interview starts at about 21'00".

NOTE: PROGRAMME IS IN DUTCH WITHOUT SUBTITLES.

Apparently this is cut from an earlier episode, and there have been episodes with him telling about Mozart and Mahler too. I will see if I can dig up those too.

Sorry! Rather than 'Dutch' or 'in Holland' I should have written 'Dutch-speaking'.

Yes, it's impressive. He was married to a Dutch wife and lived in Holland for several years but I believe that is a while ago. When I first went to one of his concerts at the Concertgebouw I did not know this however so I was very surprised to hear him do all the introductions and connecting speeches in Dutch.

Here are the three segments presented together (but still separate) without the other guests.

1) about Mozart
2) about Mahler
3) about Bartok

The one about Mahler contains English subtitles!
(too bad they haven't done this for the other two segments)
