Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 7 - Nott

John's review favorably compares Nott's Seventh to MTT's-- I'm curious about how it stacks up to the rest of the SACD competition, such as Zinman.

If this recording is on the level of the Nott/ Bamberg Ninth, it will be a mandatory purchase.

To me it is on the level of the prior recordings and this - together with MTTs cycle - is the best Mahler on SACD. Zinman is not bad but ranks second after these. And I do not say this merely because I live very close to the hometown of Nott's Bamberg orchestra in Germany.

Upon having listened only a couple of times, I rate this M7 by Nott pretty highly. It's certainly much much better, interpretively and soundwise, than Jansons with the Bayerischer Rundfunk, which surprisingly I thought was pretty decent when it came out, but it's no match for the new Nott. Another fine recording, and in DSD, is Macal with the orchestra that premiered the symphony: the Czech Philharmonic (it's on Exton). And a recent disc appeared with the same orchestra, same label, under Inbal, but it seems it's not available outside Japan. I haven't heard it. I second the view that Nott is better than Zinman, who I find a bit underwhelming. There is also of course the Gergiev M7 with the LSO, but it's been awhile since I listened to that disc; perhaps the fact that I can't recall being blown away by it says enough. And then of course the odd one by Neeme Järvi with the Haags Residentieorkest: good sound from Chandos, but interpretively probably too extreme for most with those fast tempos. As something out of the ordinary I think it's an interpretation worthwhile listening to.
