received this from amazon. Strangely enough, it does not seem to have a center channel. Anyone else notice this?

4.0 recordings are released occasionally - I think the Hyperion Rachmaninov Concerti with Hough and the Chailly Mahler 3 are 4.0. I don't like them though I must admit.

i don't recall any other exton's being 4 channel. I really think the center channel is key.

Is it any good? Can Ashkenazy bring to life the ancient Rome?

i'd like to know this too, as (very surprisingly in many ways) no other MC versions of the roman trilogy are as far as i know available. they should be a gift to 5.0/1 recording.

I enjoyed the preformances greatly with the usual recording quality you expect from this label. Thought it was 5 channel but can't check as I have lost my analogue bypass to my Tosh hd dvd player and am listening only in 2. Would also be more forthcoming but just off for Christmas. I think it's a good buy. I also have the Reiner.

From Geohominid's review of this, my great satisfaction with the Exton Bruckner 6th and dissatisfaction with the Mozart Haffner Serenade, it appears that Exton is absolutely capable of greatness but doesn't always deliver.

Having wrestled with this disc for several days for my review, I'm astonished! Just put it in my Marantz which announced 5 channels on its display, but you are right, there is no sound from the centre speaker. I did check the output from the rears because of issues raised in the forum about synthesised sound, but didn't stick my head in the middle of the front speaker row as I find that if I get obsessed with hi-fi technicalities in a listening session I can't relax and concentrate on the music. The disc clearly has a little silver label with Surround 5 on it.
I bought the disc from JPC, so I shall write to them and point out that it appears to be deficient, perhaps with a mastering or pressing fault, and will let members know what transpires, i.e. if Exton respond to them. While a missing centre could certainly affect the image and tonal balance, it would not account for the two-dimensional multimiked approach in the recording, which is unpleasant to my ears.

I have the same forces in another Exon disc, Respighi's Church Windows, Belkis Queen of Sheba and Belfagor OVCL 00216, and that has no true centre channel, only ambience. Although it claims to be a 5 channel recording, it is clearly enhanced stereo only. Pip440

sadly i just did! i think there is SOME very small amount of sound there, more like the kind of feed you'd give to a sub in a 5.1 mix. but there is VIRTUALLY nothing, that's for sure.

i find the MC layer too closely recorded, glassy, and obviously spot-miked in places. the performances i find pretty generalised and unremarkable in impact.

we could do with a really good 5.0 version of these pieces.
